Falling (2024) Original Oil Painting by Ryan Louder

Falling is an original oil painting on canvas, 70 x 100 cm, by London artist Ryan Louder.

A figure in white holds both arms up and leans back, surrender or ascent, take your pick, the painting refuses to settle it. The dress fans out and dissolves into the field instead of falling under gravity. Around the body a vortex of colour turns, red, orange, yellow, teal, green, deep blue, band after band, filling the whole canvas. There is no ground, no horizon, nothing built. The figure only exists in relation to the colour turning around it. The face is a pale oval with no features.

Some marks are mechanically regular and some are loose and expressionist, as if the vortex was watched steadily and then lost. That flicker between seeing and losing it is exactly the state this painting came out of.
