DABUTSUDEN (2025) Original Oil Painting by KAZUMA WATANABE

82 x 62 x 3cm

$3,000

This painting depicts a traditional Japanese temple, but it is not intended as a precise architectural record. Instead, the temple becomes a vessel for memory, time, and emotion.

The familiar structure is built through layers of energetic brushstrokes and vivid colors. Reds, blues, greens, pinks, and flashes of yellow emerge from the surface, allowing the architecture to appear as if it is constantly shifting between reality and memory.

The solid geometry of the temple contrasts with the spontaneous, almost restless marks of the paint. This tension reflects the coexistence of permanence and change — the enduring presence of Japanese cultural heritage and the passage of time that continually transforms our perception of it.

Rather than simply depicting a place, I wanted to capture the feeling of standing before something that has existed for generations: a sense of silence, history, and accumulated human memory.

The painting combines a recognizable Japanese subject with an expressive, contemporary approach, allowing the image to move beyond landscape and become a reflection on memory, impermanence, and the passage of time.
