Artworks by Matt Mak

Matt Mak is a Hong Kong-born artist currently based in the United Kingdom. He holds a Master of Arts in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His practice spans oil painting, ink painting, mixed media, and sculptural installation.

Mak’s work is inspired by fragments of memory. He often begins with old photographs, using these images to awaken fading memories, which are then reconstructed and reimagined through painting. His visual language brings together the poetic sensibility of Chinese landscape painting and Japanese aesthetics, particularly mono no aware and yūgen. Through muted, atmospheric tones, negative space, fragmented imagery, and traces of time, his work reflects the complex and often contradictory emotions of modern life, shaped by memory, loss, and reality.

Mak has participated in numerous exhibitions, including Affordable Art Fair and group exhibitions, and his works are held in private collections.
