Grass Storm
Near Julian, California — 2009.
I was out photographing in the hills near Julian when the weather started to turn. The sky was getting darker over the mountains, but the last light was still catching the grass, turning the whole meadow gold.
I love that moment before a storm arrives. Everything looks much the same, but you can feel a change coming. The clouds gather over the ridgeline, the light shifts, and the landscape takes on a completely different character.
I was drawn to the contrast between the dry grass in the foreground and the dark trees and clouds beyond. There are fence posts running across the valley, and patches of reddish scrub among the gold. Nothing dramatic is happening in the photograph, yet the whole scene feels charged with weather.
This was the same day I photographed Storm Tree. Snow had started falling on the higher ground, although down in the meadow you wouldn't necessarily have known it. I like that difference between what you can see and what you sense is coming.
Photographed on my Leica M8 in 2009. The image is presented full frame, without cropping.
