Ascending (2026) Original Watercolour by Tim Smith

Ascending

A window view in watercolour, in soft blues and rose-pink lattices, with slender yellow lines rising through the screens like the stems of a garden. They have a light, graceful look, and then you realise what they are: the trails of missiles launching.

Ascending is part of my Alqantara set, named after a street in Gaza City, which explores how beauty, memory and destruction can sit side by side in the same view. Here the patterned screens and the gentle colour hold the eye, while the yellow lines pull it upward and make the image harder to settle into.
