Finishing touches to my new painting of Malham Cove, North Yorkshire. I was inspired by Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights for this painting. Malham Cove would have been very well known to the Bronte family.

    Sketching at the coast.

    Sketching at the coast.

I have been sketching and photographing grey seals along the North Norfolk coast this week. Now I have all the reference material I need I am really excited to get started with watercolour and oil paintings featuring these wonderful animals.

    Grey Seals

    Grey Seals

There have been record numbers colonizing the Norfolk coastline in recent years, the biggest colony being found at Blakeney. The grey seals are bigger than the common seal and there pups start out pure white. The Norfolk coastline is so beautiful and unspoilt it makes a wonderful backdrop to these magnificent wild animals and I feel so privileged to have the opportunity to sit and paint them in there natural habitat. They are remarkably tolerant and unconcerned by people.

ON THE EASEL - Bullfinches and Blackberries

ON THE EASEL - Bullfinches and Blackberries

I brought some blackberries in to paint and quickly decided to paint a pair of bullfinches on the prickly stems. Bullfinches really enjoy feasting on these juicy sweet berries and are such a lovely warm Autumn colour. I am really looking forward to painting them but will have to paint them last as the blackberries will not last too long and I will use photographs for the birds.
