  • Biography

Hello. I'm a photographer with my work showcased on my long standing photoblog.

I am interested in the sea, the forest and common ground.

    Projects

    Common Ground
For four years my Common Ground photographic project examined the Common and the old cemetery to artistically interpret a landscape that has been shaped by human activity through management of this shared space. Common Ground had an Arts Council funded exhibition in the Southampton City Art Gallery from 2 December 2017 to 7 April 2018.

    Ridge Trees
The Ridge Trees project concentrates on a specific area of the New Forest, Hampshire governed by two triangles. The first of these relates to three geographical points of the Forest roughly covering Puckpits, Vinney Ridge and Markway and all photographs have been made within this boundary. The second is concerned with light and time with the three points being mist, in autumn/winter and at the cusp of dawn.

    Sea Fever
We are frequently drawn to the flow of the sea and the ever changing landscape of shore, sea and sky. Coastal landscapes may often offer a simple geography of a beach, the sea and a cloudscape and as such there is a challenge to construct new and inventive photographic interpretations. Sea Fever is my interpretation of those seascapes and of the close affinity between sea and sky.

    Exhibitions

I have exhibited over 20 times in a sole and collaborative capacity principally showing project work. Exhibitions during the past three years:

    2018
    Royal Scottish Academy Open Exhibition
    Southampton City Art Gallery
Society of Scottish Artists, Royal Scottish Academy

    2017
The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts
    Royal Scottish Academy Open Exhibition

    2016
    Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

    Red House Museum, Christchurch, Dorset

    Books
I have had three books published each dealing with a project:
    'Sea Fever' by Triplekite
    'Ridge Trees' by Kozu Books
    'Common Ground' by Kozu Books

Bracken is seen as tumbling surf, fallen trees as crashing waves, and the deep blues and greens of a winter morning echo the colour of the deep cold sea.

A new exhibition of unique, award-winning landscape photography from the country’s south eastern corner, by Valda Bailey, David Baker, Terry Gibbins and Finn Hopson.

The South Eastern counties of England are not necessarily the first places that spring to mind when considering landscape photography. They are often dismissed as being too small, too busy or just too ‘easy’. The work of each of these photographers challenges that view. Each has their own unique approach to capturing this landscape, and the resulting images reflect an intimate knowledge of places that others often pass by.
