    Brushes & Pigments

I'm a painter working in both oil and egg tempera. For egg tempera paintings I make my own pigments. For work in oil I use the traditional paint in tubes which are also made from the same pigments but with additives such as linseed oil. Then the painter further dilutes oil paint with other mediums thus diminishing the color to some degree leaving it to the effects of yellowing and cracking over time depending on the mediums added. An egg tempera painter uses far less paint, even while working with full strength pigments, by building up very thin layers of paint to achieve their desired effect in the end. The polymerization at the molecular level of working with egg tempera means there is much less, to no, yellowing and an extremely sturdy work surface (once the paint has cured and if tempered accurately) - just look at the work from the 13th and 14th centuries in museums with colors as brilliant as if painted yesterday! And, no, the yellow of the yolk doesn't come through in the pigment, not even in whites. Created on non-flexible, sealed and gessoed panels, work in egg tempera is just as sturdy as work in oil as long as typical care is taken not to toss the work around.
