About Marny Lawton

  • Biography
I am an American artist based in New England using the ancient mediums of oil or egg tempera. Most paintings are sold without a frame, although some are sold with a basic frame as noted in painting details. This leaves the choice of a frame up to the buyer as framing can be very personal.  I fell in love with painting at an early age and more recently with egg tempera after taking workshops with the master egg tempera painter Koo Schadler. As a representational artist (realist without being photo realism) I take a naturalist's and painterly, not a romanticist's perspective, seeing the gemlike qualities of everyday scenes and objects: iridescence, color changes where light hits a curve, shapes refracted through a water-filled glass bottle, shadows and reflections in landscapes and interiors. Choosing the representational style and small to medium sized paintings, I search for the meditative beauty in the ordinary and the extraordinary in the often overlooked, things not seen with a fleeting glance. While I like to push against the precision needed for egg tempera painting, I also like the spontaneity of oiI. I also love music and play the piano, the cello and do a fair amount of gardening which you'll often see in many of my paintings. @marnylawton on Instagram
