  • Karine Paronyanc Art Profile

Creation of a canvas is inspired by limitless possibilities of colour, infiniteness of visual forms and creativity. Through colour, light and ornament I share with the viewer my delights and joy of existence. For me, the process of creation is an amazing journey in which the Sun, Cosmos, salt of the Earth and Nature’s rhythms applied to the canvas surface create absolutely new spatial forms in a viewer’s personal space. The collection «Watermelons» played a very special part in my biography: watermelon-lotus has become my symbol and logo. I talk to the viewer in the language of metaphors, legends, symbols and subtle emotional states. I perceive no contradiction in a positive character of an art piece and a serious semantic message.

    Author's Technique

    Author's Technique

I stay true to traditional painting techniques, deliberately avoiding the use of digital auxiliary techniques. In addition to standard canvas and oils, I often use mixed author’s techniques. I use dry pastel chalk, natural charcoal, gold leaf, interspersed collage. My paintings are very tactile, the roughness of the canvas itself and the variety of oil textures, contrasts of matted and lacquered textures, the patina effect are all of great importance. Therefore, I carry out the preparation, stretching and priming of the canvas only by hand and exclusively according to the artist's recipes. These canvases literally keep the warmth of their creator’s hands. Using a complex technique of glazing I achieve multidimensional perception of the image created on the plane of a canvas and define it with a deep, complex and broken-like colour. Overlaying a great number of transparent layers, each one on top of the next makes the picture vivid and multifaceted, as if animated. With different lighting and depending on the emotional state, the viewer discovers new details and perspectives. A person is free to choose whether to plunge into depths or stay on the surface. The canvas becomes a living organism in the space of beholder.

    About the Studio

    About the Studio

Along with the end result, I value the process of creation - comprehension, the rendering of mobile abstractions in a scenic and palpable shape, and an endeavor to convey subtle intonations, reasons, and experiences through visual representations. As a result, I frequently work in sites with a history, particularly those that are at the crossroads of several eras and aspects. My studio is the entire world. The roof of a prominent radio station, an abandoned airfield, and a ramshackle greenhouse - they have all become iconic locations for my creative process. My current workshop is housed in one of the Riga Botanical Garden's ancient buildings; adjacent are exotic plant pavilions, research laboratories, old manor houses, and the University of Latvia's vintage lecture hall.

    My Motto

    My Motto

My motto is “Art with a Bio tag”. Bio – life (from Greek Bios). It is a play on words, which signifies product quality and creator’s careful attitude to humans, nature and its rhythms.

    Greenhouse Effect 15.07.23 – 22.07.23

    Greenhouse Effect 15.07.23 – 22.07.23

The multimedia project “The Greenhouse Effect” is a new exhibition of artist Karine Paronyanc, timed to the 100th anniversary of the Latvian university botanical garden. Being a conceptual follow-up to pictorial cycles “Urban Philosophy” and “Biosystems”, “The Greenhouse Effect” continues a study into the interaction of plasticity of living nature and linearity of the mind of civilization, discovering new angles and smoothing the edges of the eternal “man vs nature” conflict. The venue of the project is the Latvian university botanical garden, which is an iconic space for the artist: her permanent workshop is in its historical lecture hall, while in summer Karine arranges her artistic residence-studio in an abandoned greenhouse.
