Biography
I have loved making art since I was a child and I've explored the natural world for years as a traveler, master gardener and environmentalist. I'm also inspired by interesting scientific theories, sci-fi, poetry and music, especially Sounds From The Ground.
My medium is encaustic and in addition to paintings on panels you will find encaustic monotypes in my shop which are one-of-a-kind, hand-pulled fine art prints. Basically they are paintings created on a heated aluminum palette then transferred to paper by hand burnishing with a baren. I print on a variety of papers including handmade and Japanese printmaking papers. All of my materials are archival.Encaustic is both an ancient method and medium consisting of pigment suspended in beeswax and it has been used for thousands of years. Modern encaustic paint also contains damar resin, a natural tree resin added to increase the hardening of wax. Encaustic paintings are extremely durable and archival - they will never yellow, fade or deteriorate. The Faiyum Egyptian encaustic paintings are as vibrant and colorful today as they were when painted 2000 years ago.
Please note: the normal home or office environment cannot harm an encaustic painting since beeswax will not melt until it is 162°F. However, as with any fine art painting, do not hang your encaustic painting close to a fireplace or other heating source or in direct sunlight.
