    Hello friends, what's your goal for 2023? The new year is a wonderful time for a new goal, full of promise and opportunity. Years ago, I made my goal as I wanted to paint better and bigger. With some of the projects that I've been working on for 2022 wrapping up, this extra-large artwork counts as a breakthrough in my artist's career with no doubt. Meanwhiles, it is also the largest artwork that I have ever painted. Not to mention how much I love the process as well as the outcome. Are you happen to look for a large statement piece for a special place in your home, office or even holiday house, this might be the one to attract every guest's attention! I present you the latest also the largest artwork fresh off my studio- A Plentiful Harvest - Passion Flower and Fruit By HSIN LIN 7/12/2022 Acrylic on triple primed gesso stretched gallery-wrapped canvas. The sides are painted Black. Ready to hang, D rings and wire attached at the back in gallery standard. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Sealed with clear varnish. 152.4cm (W) x 121.9cm (H) x 3.83cm (D) Affirmation: What pleases us shapes our harvest. To experience the changing of the seasons and to present moments, it has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom in my surrounding during its flowering season. This artwork is inspired by the Passion Vine that I spotted in my neighbourhood close to my art studio. I was fascinated by those interesting fringed petals and splendorous tendrils; the white petals shine bright like precious gems under the sunshine. Fun Fact about these unusual blossoms - Passion Flower Essence is used to purify and strengthen one’s connection to unconditional love even nowadays. A Truly Special and Symbolic Gift- Passion Flower, was named by Roman Catholic priests in the 15th and 16th centuries for the Passion of Jesus Christ. There were old sayings that the flower's five petals and five-petallike sepals represented the 10 faithful apostles. The circle of filaments in the centre of the bloomsome stands for the Crown of Thorns. Flowers always bloom in their own time without competing with other flowers. I am back for the 1st blog post of December 2022! ❤️ Featured artwork in this photo- We Are One - Kangaroo Paw, Grevillea and Clivia - Australian Garden (2021) By HSIN LIN Original artwork Sold. Affirmation – We are all the waves in the ocean, together we are one. Australian native plants are one of my favourite themes to study and paint. I especially love how our native plants survive all kinds of extreme weather conditions in their own unique ways and still stand tall. It reminds me that we shall never give up no matter what kind of difficulty we encounter in life. Kangaroo Paw- originates from western Australia. The most common meaning for the bloom is uniqueness and individuality. Succulent symbolize Loyalty and endurance. Grevillea symbolizes courage, primarily native to Australia, are evergreen shrubs or trees of great beauty with needle-like to fern-like foliage and incredibly flamboyant flowers. Clivia is also a very common plant that you can find in the Australian garden, also known as the Natal lily or bush lily. The spiritual meaning of the blossoms is very positive. Its symbolic meaning comes from the appearance- of tall, straight leaves, symbolising fortitude, unyielding, modesty and gentleness.     To experience the changing of the seasons and to present moments, it has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom in my surrounding during its flowering season. I can't describe how much I love this piece. After months of production, It's finally here ! I present you the latest piece from my award-winning/signature series -Bloom like flowers. White lilies symbolise purity, virtue, commitment and rebirth, and are often used at weddings. They can also represent a rejuvenation of the soul. In this particular artwork, those subtle, tiny fallen pollen on those silky soft petals, leaf veins and the texture of flower buds are definitely my favourite details. It is such a joy to paint, to study the lights and shades on these gorgeous blossoms. A journey that I have enjoyed so much. It's a coincidence that I ended up having two lilies in this artwork, which reminds me of our relationship with ourselves, with others and with the world.     [💡How to paint realistic portraits with acrylics by Hsin Lin ] -{Part 3} Quote from original article- Step 6 - Blending the colour For the realistic flowers, I use thin liner brushes to outline the silhouette with a darker tone, then switch to a round soft brush with a lighter tone on it, and quickly smooth the outline colour with a lighter tone while the paint is half dry. This will create the gradient effect. It also gives a perfectly smooth blend of the flower petals this way. Artist’s tips and hints Take a break Your eyes might become tired and confused by working on the intricated composition for a long time. To avoid confusion at any stage, this is what I do - put an arrow or any mark on the centred petal that you want to start with. So anytime you come back to painting you know where to start. Rest and look at your work from afar Rest whenever you feel tired, painting with tired eyes might result in a colour combination you didn’t want or disorderly composition. A good way other than resting, is to have a walk outside looking at the view far away or under the natural sunlight, in order to balance the vision. My great pleasure to have your love and support.💕 Quote from original article - [🏆How to paint realistic portraits with acrylics by Hsin Lin ] Contemporary nature artist Hsin Lin is stepping us through how to paint realistic portraits with acrylics. Hsin’s added her signature florals to the artwork, so you can also learn a thing or two about painting realistic flowers too. This artwork is called “Poise and Pride.” In April 2018, it was awarded the ‘Highly Commended Acrylic’ in The Hut Gallery Open Award Exhibition. The goal of my art journey has always been to stay true to myself and be true to the present moments. In this work, I decided to add in the flowers from my front yard - peony stands for honour, and bush lily stands for good luck. In order to capture the details in this artwork, it actually took me several months to re-reconnect to myself mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I absolutely enjoyed painting these photo-realistic flowers, sometimes I even have dreams full of beautiful, delicate flower petals after a long day in the studio, which is totally worth it. I always want to deliver an important message in my floral series. Now is the very best time to be alive. Be at the moment, be yourself. Whenever you are experiencing difficulty, life itself can be bloomed like flowers with no fear. Step 1 - Overall Sketch for composition In the preliminary sketch, I try to keep this step simple and brief, but definitely think through the overall composition. I use black watercolour pencils and a HB pencil over the undertone for the shadow and the leaves’ layout. The reason I used watercolour pencils for drafting, is because it blends in well, with no sketching trace left once the second layer of paint is applied. Or it can be easily removed with a little bit of water. Step 2 - Drafting the feature proportion and flower petals in detail Now it’s time to sketch in the detail. In this painting, the major object that I wanted to point out, is the specific peony roses and the bush lilies. Because the flower is made up of many layers of petals, these need to be sketched as detailed as possible in this stage. As the layout had been decided as the firmed line in step 1, draw the silhouette of the petals of each flower precisely and find where the light comes from. Sketch the and leaves on the background, pencil and eraser are used in this step. If you want a more clean-finished result, apply another layer of varnish spray. Or what I do is I brush another thin layer of diluted gesso and let dry for a day. Step 3 - Starting with the background colour Start with Burnt Sienna, mixed with Titanium white in the process to create the depth of background. Step 4 - Background Leaves- grevillea, the flower of courage. More layers of green tone are added to the background and now we have the line and shape of the leaves established. Grevillea is one of my favorited trees. I adore the beauty of it every day I walk into the woods near my studio. Grevillea stands for strength and courage, this is exactly what I would like to express in this piece. Step 5 - Start the main section of the flower Now comes to the main part, I have a special size 4 round Sable Brush that I kept for more than 20 years, works wonder on the flower details. Structured acrylics are used here, sometimes I mix the colour with impasto medium for textured and non-transparency purposes. When it comes to the main flowers, I start with darker tone and then blended in white for a lighter tone which is added gradually step by step, so the colour hue would stay in harmony as a whole for the painting.
