In a recent visit to Tana Toraja in Sulawesi, Indonesia, I became fascinated with the elaborate and all encompassing funeral rights of the people there - the culmination of which is a funeral service lasting for several days, the finale of which is the slaughter of animals including water buffalo in order for their souls to be taken to the afterworld. The buffalo are graded in value dependant upon several criteria including coat and eye colour, horn size and direction. The most valuable buffalo are the spotted albino with blue eyes, an arbitrary choice - but what of value isn't chosen arbitrarily? This is the first in a series which I hope to exhibit next year. This will be on show at MOMA Machynllech from 8th July until 31st August.

    Drawing 'Dress code'

This drawing took about an hour and a half, obviously that would be a very long video so I've speeded it up for convenience.

    Close up and personal

I paint quite a lot of self-portraits, I have several reasons for doing so; I am a cheap and available model, I am very familiar with my own face and can therefore concentrate on the painting and not the likeness, I don't have to worry about it looking 'nice'.

You need to be able to relax while you paint, not worrying about making a mess helps!

    Larger than life.

    Larger than life.

I've recently start painting quite large scale paintings, having trained as an illustrator I've found it quite difficult to loosen up my style, painting on a larger scale with a bigger brush has helped a lot - and it's great fun. I've also started experimenting with using different substrates, this painting is on a pale green damask - the pattern in the material gives the work an interesting dimension.
