    Pavement pattern development

I'm continuing to work on this theme, from a random pattern perspective. I'm allowing layers of paint to dry and then layering and lifting off paint from the top of that. I'm choosing different textured tissue, paper and fabric to lift off the paint; I'm finding that this leaves a kind of transfer print on the surface of the painting. I believe that 'random' is a keyword in my current creative process....the work evolves, subject to the density of paint I use, amount of lifting off and over-layering I apply.

    Sketchbook page, 25/07/22

This sketch is worked to A1 size. It's actually one of the earlier of my recent sketches and I think that I was being too faithful to the actual patterns of the patched pavements and the colouring. Definitely needed to go through this stage before abstracting from the original source material and then allowing myself to experiment with surface texture.

The surface of this sketch initially felt a bit overworked but in retrospect appears simply distressed and highly textured. I attempted to follow the colouring of the tarmac, rather than using the earthier tones I've been favouring in my other sketches.

Also created at A4 size and with the same source material as my other recent sketches. Keeping the colour palette consistent throughout, drawing each sketch together as a series. I'm using a variety of textured tissue to lift out areas of paint....this leaves gorgeous, accidental patterns on the painted surface.

My current favourite source material is the 'patchy' pavements around where we now live. Essentially the pavements have been repaired badly and where some people might justifiably moan about their appearance and unevenness, I'm out with my camera locating interesting juxtapositions of new tarmac and the older, original, paving slabs.

    Sketchbook page 4, 25/07/22

This sketch is originally A4 size with a border, so a bit smaller than the page it occupies. I am currently working between two sketchbooks, one A4 and one A1.....similar approaches in both. It's quite a challenge to keep adjusting the scale from one to another, although I think that my preference is working on A4.

Another of my sketchbook studies. Lots of texture work here. I'm favouring an organic palette of yellow ochre, burnt umbre and some earthy reds, whilst blending in some prussian blue for some more sombre notes. I'm spending time lifting off areas of paint, when wet, which reveals some of the collaged areas beneath the paint.

    Sketchbook piece, 25/07/22

    Sketchbook piece, 25/07/22

I have recently devoted more time to my sketchbooks. I particularly enjoy working with this format, whatever the size of the sketchbook, it's possible to create something more tactile, less of a showpiece, and more authentic. It's possible to touch the surface of a sketch in order to understand the process. My sketchbooks are tricky to close because of all the materials I have added to each piece. In many ways, my sketchbooks are my journals. I aim to update my shop, on a regular basis, with recently completed sketches. Watch this space. And soon, I am launching my website!

    Syrian postcard project

    Syrian postcard project

Postcard size collaged images. These images are handmade 'petit' versions of larger pieces I've made in the past. The materials comprise of wrappings and cards from Christmas juxtaposed. Hopefully they have the sparkle and rich colour that we not only associate with the festive period but are typical of illustrations in children's books. Ultimately, I hope that the children receiving my postcards will find them appealing, beautiful and be able to treasure them.

For me, producing artwork is a necessity, it is fundamental to my well-being and my everyday raison d'etre. What is most rewarding is the discovery that Artfinder viewers like my work also; an added bonus.
