    I also begun learning and exploring wet in wet oil painting rather than building layers wet on dry. So far I'm enjoying the process much more and am loving the results. With "Still life with lemons and bowl" I painted wet on wet over several days. Some consider this Alla prima as it's still created wet on wet .. others don't because it technically not one session .. either way here's a few pics of how i went about it. I first set up a still life photo and altered the background colour in photoshop. Next i set up my pallet ... mixing from Cad yellow lemon, Cad yellow Medium, Yellow ochre light, Cad red light, Magenta, Burnt sienna, Old holland blue, Ultramarine blue, Burnt umber and titanium white.

    My oil paint is stored in jars premixed with oil paint medium. As I'm painting wet on wet i wanted a medium that would slow the drying process, this way the paint stays wet on the pallet for a week while i'm working and allows the paint to also stay continuously wet on the canvas for the duration of the painting. anyone interested in the medium recipe should check out http://www.drawmixpaint.com/supplylist/international.html Once my main colours are mixed and on the pallet I'm ready to go ... from these colours i mix additional colours as needed.

    Starting with the single lemon. I add a little of the background and shading to see how it's working. It's late so that was all for the night.

    A long session with quite a lot covered. I added to the single lemon and the completed the three lemons, the bowl, the background with some shadowing and began some of the shadows on the table. At this point although i was happy with what i had i knew the lemons and bowl would need more work.

    Painting the leaves. At this point i thought i'd get the leaves done. This took longer than i thought. The leaf attached to the lemon came together quite easy. The leaf near the bowl however took much longer to get right. So i persisted until i was happy with it.

    At this point i added shadow to the leaves, then needed to further refine the leaf near the bowl. Once that was complete i needed to finish painting the table top. In doing so i redid the shadows and added some reflections i noticed in the reference photo. This added to the overall painting. From there i felt all four lemons needed further refining, mostly to give the shadows on the lemons more depth and then refine the high lights. As you can see the bowl was also refined. All done waiting to dry and hopefully find a place in someones home.
