“This work is titled ‘Rain Music’ not only in a figurative sense because of the way the paint dances on the paper, but in a direct sense too; if we imagine that each umbrella and silhouetted figure under it are piano keys, you can really play a real song!”
“I created this acrylic painting while living in Doha, Qatar (2006). I felt inspired to paint the charming minarets, mosques and vibrancy of life in the traditional Souqs. This powerful image of the overshadowing blue ornament came to me in a dream, when I woke, I couldn't wait to paint what I had visualised that night. Recently, I've come to believe it may be a subconscious symbol of a water droplet as the heat was phenomenal in Qatar. What do you think? Doha is a captivating, beautiful city, I hope I've captured this in my 'Mixing paint, mixing cultures' collection.”
"1946 Love Letter - 'My Darling Sweetheart' - Letter 1 Page 3, 2013" by Laura New
“A delicate original ink illustration upon a genuine love letter from 1946. This artwork was created using reclaimed paper ephemera from my collection. The illustration is a hand drawn dove using very fine nibs with black and white ink upon a love letter dated 7th May 1946, making this piece extremely unique. Amidst my search for various paper ephemera, I happened upon a group of letters written in the late spring of 1946 by a trainee Navy Engineer named James to his sweetheart and fiancée Ruth. They were separated by almost 3000 miles whilst James was stationed at a U.S. Navy Training Centre at Port Hueneme in California whilst he underwent his specialist training for the Navy. In the earlier letters James describes the strict rules of his particular barracks, the jokes he and the other trainees play on each other in their camp (removing the slats in the bunk beds so the owner of the bed falls right through when he lies down) and most clearly, how much he misses and loves Ruth. On 28th April he writes of a letter he has sent to his parents; “I wrote them a letter and told them how I felt about you and that I’m going to marry you.””
“This is an original oil painting depicting a romantic couple sharing a kiss on a lovely sunny afternoon in the park. The red umbrella adds just a touch of romance as these two exchange sentiments of love as if no one was watching.”
“This artwork was created in Sweden during a summer painting trip with California figurative artist, Jeremy Lipking. Our beautiful model was backlit and I loved the vibrant transparency of her skirt. Since we had the Northern light working to our advantage, our painting time lasted forever. It was a painter’s dream!”
“While on vacation in Italy, my husband and I happened upon this sophisticated Roman kitty. My heartstrings were instantly tugged as it reminded me of my own cat and dog at home in the States. I wondered if they were pining away for us. One thing was for sure, kitties are the same whether they are Italian or American. This one was quite indignant about being locked out of its shop. I leaned down and gave it a sympathetic pat on the head and I think kitty felt reassured.”
"Flamenco Rhythms (A Large Scale Watercolor), 2015" by Violeta Damjanovic-Behrendt
“‘Flamenco Rhythms’ is inspired by the various artistic elements of flamenco: the singing, the dancing, the playing of the guitars and castanets, the compass (rhythm clapping by shoes), the hands clapping, all accompanying the energetic and harmonious dance of the two women in red.”
“My mentor Robert Gilmore always told me, in his thick Boston accent, “If you want to make anything abstract, just zero in on it.” This is the case in this close-up study of the eyes and face of the artist's beautiful muse. It has strong elements of realism, while displaying the abstraction of enhanced color and brushstrokes that make this piece much more than just a realistic study of a females eyes and face. You can feel the emotion and energy vibrating from this piece.”
"Enfamil at Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, 2009" by Thu Nguyen Art Gallery
“I painted a scene when I was in Vietnam adopting a child. I was so captivated with the little baby and forgot to look out the window to admire the great scenery.” Inspired by the work of Andrew Wyeth, artist Thu Nguyen creates realistic paintings with a sense of conceptual appeal. Nguyen earned a BFA in painting at California State University, and has since received multiple grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation.
“This is one of my favorite paintings and my memories of the experience that led to this painting are still as fresh as ever. There have been many times when I’ve been out on the Penobscot Bay and the Maine Windjammer fleet is barely moving. It’s always a little disappointing to see the sails limp and the skipper at the helm waiting for a ripple on the water to indicate a breeze a comin’. There have been a few times though when it’s been just the opposite. This was the case in ‘Offshore Challenge’. The schooner Nathaniel Bowditch and the Heritage are depicted in a stiff wind, in deep water. I wanted to capture a rolling sea, with the schooners at their best.”
