“This painting is the result of a photo shoot with the students of the school of art I work in. It's been much fun for me to try and make them act like classic style figures in a modern environment. I then had a long working session on my PC to choose the best shots for every subject and re-assemble them in the composition I worked on.”
“Bertie is a fine fellow and I loved painting him. Cows have such funny, expressive faces and are curious creatures but Bertie's expression just makes me smile; his cute face seems to have more questions than answers. I first drew him with pen on rough handmade paper, and then used a wash technique for my wet in wet watercolour process. I was afraid he would not come to life when I did, but I need not have worried! I adore painting animals, and so happy to have them around my studio.”
“This painting is the most vulnerable and personal one from my ‘Hal Light’ series, as it comes from a place of doubt and uncertainty. Music is always an important part of my creative process, and this particular work was inspired by Karen O's song ‘Rapt’: “Bright as a star, be the light strobing down on me...Do I really need another habit like you.” The painting portrays the romance of fragility and ambivalence; my goal was to shine light in a space that I tend to keep shut out, and come in touch with my feelings.”
"April 17, Roches de Mariol, a glimpse of sun on grey sky, 2015" by ANNE BAUDEQUIN
“The mountain scenery around my studio inspires me every day. This familiar landscape is different every time, transformed by the light, the weather changes, the seasons. My paintings attempt to depict this infinite variety of moods. That morning I painted a break through the clouds. I liked the stark contrast of the morning light on the grey sky and the intense colours of Spring, blue mountains in the background and green meadows. Through all these captured moments, I hope to convey the immutable and timeless character of this landscape.”
“I love dramatic skies. I've been lucky enough to travel to more than 50 countries, but some of my favourite skies are those in the UK and Ireland. I find the sky, with its endless permutations of clouds, colours and mood, a constant source of inspiration. Whether it is walking around in Southwest Ireland, or visiting the Isle of Wight, or simply looking up at the sky in London, the changing skies are a reminder of life and renewal. I created this painting using liquid acrylic and ink - mediums that allow the colours to flow together and transform into wonderful shapes. I have also recently started adding in some metallic accents to my work, transforming the brown soil in my paintings into russet and warm landscapes full of shimmering gold, copper and bronze.”
“I continue to search for my ideal feminine beauty. The deeper I ago the more interesting and challenging my mission becomes. In this painting I portray a young lady, to be more precise a beautiful young lady. It's still hard for me to understand when women are more beautiful when they smile or when they cry. So, in this painting I tried to combine both elements.”
“The flowering of the camellia in our Sussex garden was awesome this year. It was exciting to use paint in this way to depict the camellia. Each picture in my Flourishing Garden series involves several hours of drawing and painting before beginning to paint on the canvas. The series is inspired by the natural world, its rhythms and patterns that never cease to amaze me.”
“After exploring Europe for a week, I found myself to be drawn more and more towards the urban scenery and vibe. Every corner seemed to have multiple newspapers that had stood the harsh winter weather, warmed by the presence of some graffiti or street art. I wanted to add this urban sense to my paintings to give it that authentic feel. That is why this piece is made from repurposed canvas. But the creation of this piece did not stop there. The usual decay on my paintings had been altered on this piece. It was made organically, by using chemicals to achieve the reptile skin like texture.”
"The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret, 2015" by Penny Tristram
“Inspired by an original drawing from life, this painting combines abstract and figurative techniques, with a focus on the sensual qualities of oil paint. Suggesting rest, surrender, and oneness with nature, the painting has a mysterious, dreamlike quality, reflected in its title. Fans of this work have suggested that it represents a woman reclining in the tropics.”
“The Mediterranean is a bright and colourful sea that is home to an amazing fauna and marine flora. Like a jewellery box of unexpected treasures, it's both precious and fragile at the same time. Attempting to express its splendours in painting, I always feel like plunging into the striking beauty of the hidden treasures unveiling in a mysterious bluish atmosphere...”
