"Seagrove Morning, 2015" by Sandra Francis
“A painting of morning light on the sea. This is one of my favourite views and I am inspired by being totally absorbed by the colours and the light on my morning walks.”

“A painting of morning light on the sea. This is one of my favourite views and I am inspired by being totally absorbed by the colours and the light on my morning walks.”
“This painting comes from the land where wild flowers sway in the fields like waves on the sea. Herbs from the wild meadow fascinated me. They are free, free to grow to the Sun. Watered by the rain, smelling whole time of summer.”
“I painted this piece on a short painting break to the English Lake District. I set up my easel on the shore of Ullswater and began to capture the beauty of nature on my canvas. As with much of my work, I chose to interpret the energy of the spectacle before me. I like to use surreal colours and conflicting colours too sometimes to represent the shifting light of the day.”
“This series of works "Growing" is based on an intent to capture the behaviours and feelings I was discovering in my sons Jose and Miguel when they were growing and starting to know themselves. Today they are not so young.”
“This Hopperesque painting is of the fish market at the Hayes entrance to Cardiff Market. I have always loved the glaring artificial light above this fish stall. It creates some lovely colours and a pleasing depth of field. The fishmonger weighs his goods while the customer deliberates on what to have next, hence the tile "Weighing it Up".”
“This was the second dahlia that I captured during a summer session. This one inspired me because of the contrast between the pinky purple petals and the vivid green heart. These colour combinations that appear in nature are quite stunning and add that to the drama of the way the petals surround the center as if hiding a secret - I just love it.”
“The upper reaches of the River Plym trickle over the moss covered rocks of Dartmoor. On a fine day with sunlight streaming through the trees there are few places more magical.”
“I'm awfully fond of painting anything that's glassy, colorful, and shiny, and marbles are certainly all of those things and more. I loved painting these marbles, and I think it's obvious which one took me the most time! The marble's surface resembled oil on pavement, and I thought it would be a great challenge to try to paint those swirly colors and reflections. That single marble, which is about the size of a dinner plate, took days, but I think it was worth the time and trouble.”
“The title for this piece comes from the poem The Merry-Go-Round by Rainer Maria Rilke. For many years now Forrest's Gallopers has been a feature of Blackheath's Easter funfair and Rochester Sweep's Festival. It's a gorgeous traditional Victorian fairground ride. I'm fascinated by the change that takes place as night descends. The smiley sunshiny faces of children become dark and shadowy figures. Light against dark switches to dark against light. At night, the horses take centre stage.”
“After a combination of career burnout and an unexpected cross-country move, I picked up my paintbrush for the first time since childhood. After struggling through painting after painting to find my unique style and voice again, this happy accident, Stormy Seas 01, was created. It's now part of a recent collection inspired by the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean, and it's a reminder that even in the strongest storm, there is a dark, pure beauty to be found.”
