"The Bravest Man in the Universe, 2014" by Tom Rawles

“Using the title of his latest album, this painting of Bobby Womack seeks to capture the singer-songwriter's playful nature whilst also, through surrealism, looks to address his troubled personal life, especially his battle with drug addiction. The surrealism can also be interpreted as an attempt to portray the speculation that the musician is in the early stages of Alzheimer's, a subject close to the painter's heart. Using oils, layers are meticulously applied over many weeks. These layers which are visible close up seemingly blend and merge when viewed from a distance, a technique used to add a high level of depth to the painting.”

"Eating Mango at the Beach, 2014" by Penny Cannan

“This artwork was inspired by a trip to Barbados, two juicy mangos and a pristine beach. Nothing beats the freedom of sticky, sweet mango juice running down your chin and dripping over your bikini before you run into the waves and emerge clean and salt-crusted in the sun. I first captured the energy of the ocean in the background then dribbled thick mango-coloured paint onto the canvas. It took a week to dry, after which I sketched over the figures and cloaked the scene in ultramarine, reminiscent of the vibrant colours of summer.”

“This year has been the worst weather for flooding that the UK has experienced for many years, and it made me very aware of our changing climate and the impact on our coastline. We had visited Norfolk just a short time before this area was battered by the storms which made me paint this picture as I felt so close to the subject matter; the resulting mood in my painting 'Storm of the Year' is so strong.”

"Sandsend on the Yorkshire Coast, 2012" by Malcolm Ludvigsen

“One of my favourite painting spots is Sandsend, just north of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. I painted this 24x18'' canvas on the spot, surrounded by lots of curious children all of whom wanted to be put in the picture. No shortage of models that day - I was more popular than the Punch and Judy man! I am a plein-air painter - I paint outside, directly in front of the subject. This, I think, gives my work a vibrancy and life sadly lacking in much of studio painting. The work is professionally framed, grey with a white inset.”

“The Apparition series is grounded in the lyrical and fluid movements of historical calligraphic writing. The works are monotypes, which is a single and unique one-of-a-kind print. What I enjoy about working with bees wax and pigments is the marriage between painting, drawing and printmaking; I brush the color onto the plate, I draw and mark on the plate surface, and I transfer the image to paper where the color seeps and absorbs into the surface fibers.”

“This is one of my favourite paintings; it really captures the essence of space and freedom that I felt at the lake. I came upon this lake quite by chance when camping in the Canadian wilderness. We were looking for a place to stop and it had grown dark so we couldn't really see where we were apart from that there was some kind of water nearby, so we pitched camp and woke up to this amazing idyllic vista with the remains of chopped logs in the shallow water by the shore and the gorgeous Canadian pines surrounding the whole lake. I had to get my paints out at once!”

“I spent a lot of time when I was preparing this drawing looking at the mid-section of large trees and working out how best to represent them. The girl has climbed near to the top (although it is unclear how grand this tree is) to look out of the picture and into the canopy beyond.”

“I drove past this field for several days before I stopped, parked somewhere and walked back. It slopes away from the road and reveals itself step by step; buttercups of course, angelica, cow parsley, red campion and and ragged robin, dock grown rusty, sedges and sow thistle, two red poppies and many smaller Welsh ones, clover and cornflowers, thyme...

"Water Lily 3, 2013" by Mitchell Stuart

“One of the benefits of being freelance is that one day you're doing studio work with vegetables or interiors, another you're doing portraits, and some days you're free to do what ever some you want; but always with the camera by your side. This day was a kayak day and I came across some water lilies. They're so photogenic! Half of the flower was above the water, but the reflection of the water made the flower whole again. We're able to look beneath the water line and see the roots and above the water line to see the reflections, the curves of the pads and the bubbles; perhaps made by a fish?”

"clouds on the brain, 2013" by The Most Active

“‘Clouds on the brain’ is a digital collage inspired by the urban decay of a city, from damaged walls to doorways covered in graffiti and markings of the demented. This work was created in photoshop, using both photographs and drawings and bringing together a fusion of colours and textures to create a multi-layered abstract piece of work. This piece was created one afternoon in late March and is a favourite of mine because where I would normally create my art in a very freestyle way, in this case I had a vision of what I wanted and I was able to get the image from my head to the screen and achieve exactly what I wanted; a vibrant and multi faceted piece.”
