"Happiness 1, 2014" by Alex Ebdon
“In my work as a portrait artist I’ve always been fascinated by drawing and painting eyes. This study is part of a series within which I’m exploring the fundamental human emotions – happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust and surprise – which are all innately recognised in others through our expressions. With this piece I wanted to explore how we communicate happiness in our faces beyond the smile of the mouth. And they say that a true smile is always in the eyes. I used a mix of techniques on the painting, largely with a palette knife, working in oils.”
