“Freedom has limits. However, it’s hard to outline where it starts and where it ends. Through the shine of the glass we could break the boundaries of freedom in our dreams, but the bars are always there in real life. This painting is about that truth.”
"Turquoise ocean, 2014" by Christine Callum McInally
“Sailing is my other love. The turquoise waters of the west coast of Scotland, near Iona, give this painting an idyllic sense of adventure and freedom. The movement of wind and waves combine to re-create the motion of the boat and the outdoor freshness and zest for life that sailing produces. I have made a series of paintings of this particular yacht which has a beautiful hull shape and an extremely tall mast. I hope that the movement of waves and the drama of the sky will give an outdoor freshness to your home!”
"I May Just Turn Into A Flower, 2014" by Jilly Henderson
“‘I May Just Turn Into A Flower’ is an original drawing in pencil and ink. Textures and details have been added with the skinniest of pen nibs which create lots of detail to look at. I love to experiment with abstract shapes and patterns within a drawing and my imagination meanders in a happy way as I draw using words to tell a small tale within the drawing. This little soul thinks that perhaps if they sit there long enough they may just turn into a flower... I can think of worse things you could turn into!”
“It’s a dark, balmy provençal night as the season gently begins to edge towards autumn. Breathing in the heady cocktail of aromatic plants, it’s a moment to savour. In an overgrown field of diaphanous grasses, old ignored vines are barely peeking through. In the corner, an abandoned cabanon lay. In years past it gave land workers a welcome respite from the searing sun of Provence but it stands alone and neglected at the foot of the mighty Mont Ventoux. As soon as you go for a few miles into the countryside, on a clear night, you can raise your head and enjoy the stars-filled sky and start noticing the blueish swathe of the Milky Way. It is a sight to behold and I wanted to transfer that emotion to the painting.”
“Your growing antlers,” Bambi continued, “are proof of your intimate place in the forest, for of all the things that live and grow only the trees and the deer shed their foliage each year and replace it more strongly, more magnificently, in the spring.” Felix Salten - Bambi's Children. As with all of my Cartophilia artworks, my aim is to breathe new life into discarded ephemera and to create contemporary, original pieces of art. My stag is painted directly onto an original Bartholomew's map dating from the latter half of 1928. I have a particular fondness for this map company, the colours and details they used in their cartography are beautiful.”
"Once Upon a Time there was a City on the Hill" by Tiffany Budd
“I created this fantasy landscape using coloured pencil in muted and sophisticated colours. When I compose together a landscape like this, I imagine who might live there and create a story in my mind. I disappear for a while when I make these pictures! Inspired by the Cubists and Art Deco design, I “fracture” the image, focusing on perspective and light, almost making it abstract - but still recognisable. What do you think is going on in this drawing?”
"Goodmorning Manhattan, 2014" by Alessandro Andreuccetti
“Angels are my connection to the “other” fantasy world and those winged people flying between the towers are my dreams leaving my body. This painting is part of a series I’m working on now and that I've had in mind for a long time. I’m trying to recover ancient painting techniques such as fresco or mural painting; in this case I spread a thin layer of plaster and then I painted over with pigments I find in the countryside near my studio to get the desired colors such as ocher, red and brown.”
“Painting with a palette knife is a bit like putting jam and cream on freshly made scones for afternoon tea. The paint is spread on thickly in short or long strokes to create a textured 3D effect. Each stroke is individual and is not blended together like brush painting. I work on one area of the canvas at a time because the paint cannot be layered over and you have only one chance to get it right. Therefore I tend to spend several hours non stop to get the effect I want to create. Having made several smaller palette knife paintings which have sold very well on Artfinder I have had several requests for larger sizes so this is the first of my large palette knife painting and is exclusive to Artfinder. The Love Story revolves around a young couple walking slowly down a lamp lit promenade enchanted by each others presence.”
