"'Lindholm', 2012" by Simon Kirk

“In this piece I was concerned with the tension created by overlapping and interacting areas of flat color. I wanted to create flow, movement and depth whilst retaining the flatness of the surface. I used the decollage technique – I repeatedly built up layers of composition, color and abstract imagery and then stripped parts away by etching or sanding. With the emphasis on this painting process I combined improvisation and energy to reach a balance of chaos and control.” Today only, buy one of Simon's mixed media paintings and get one free in our advent calendar - https://www.artfinder.com/advent-calendar/

"Pretty Horses, 2014" by Luna North

“I watched the pretty horses run free across the field. They ran fast, the wind blowing through the trees. I captured the lines with pure color in a contemporary mid century modern design. This linocut was hand printed by me in my studio using oil printing inks and fine Japanese paper.” This December, save 20% on Luna's beautiful linocut prints in our advent calendar - https://www.artfinder.com/advent-calendar/

"Recess, 2014" by Becci Maryanne

“‘Recess’ shows a bear, atop mushroom lookout, surrounded by a (tiny) forest of mushrooms while a bird wears a mushroom hat. I like the idea that it's a weird, sort of terrifying playground and they're all very much enjoying themselves. Either that or the bird has come up with a super impressive way of passing undetected. Do bears eat birds? I don't know. The original painting was created using watercolour and a bit of pen.” This December, buy one of Becci's illustrations and get one free in our advent calendar - https://www.artfinder.com/advent-calendar/

"Isle of Skye, Scotland. From the Bealach Na Ba on the Applecross peninsula., 2014" by Cath Waters

“I try to capture the solitude and calm of special places in Scotland. This work is of the majestic Cuillin mountain range on the Hebridean Island of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish highlands (viewed here from the Beallach Na Ba (Pass of the cattle) on the road to Applecross on the mainland). This work is a digital collage combining creative landscape photography with painting, watercolour washes, crackle glazes and textures of peeling varnish, old parchment, fabric, crumbling plaster, scratched metal...all sorts of unusual things to create gentle, painterly mixed media collages.”

"Coffee Bear, 2014" by Gabriel Böhmer

“Gabriel insists that this bear was once a series of maps focused on the topography of an old forest - which was cut down to make the maps. Eventually the maps grew tired of this absurdity and decided to express themselves as a bear. Now, the bear has sharp claws, but he's kindly gone through the trouble of making you a nice cup of coffee - even grinding the stuff by paw - so the least you can do is have it. Watch your fingers!” This December, save 20% on Gabriel Böhmer's illustrations in our advent calendar - https://www.artfinder.com/advent-calendar/

"'Blushing Roses'" by Ewa Czarniecka

“I don't feel the need to capture everything exactly as it exists in so-called reality. To appreciate space and form from an imaginative, spiritual and non-realistic perspective for me comes closer to capturing what's more real; that which leaves an impression on my heart and mind. The unseeable spirit that moves form and space. So to me abstraction and true representation are not so far apart. I seek to paint not only objects, but also the spirit therein. For me this is the most personal, emotional and thought-provoking form of art.” This December, save 10% on Ewa's oil paintings in our advent calendar - https://www.artfinder.com/advent-calendar/

"Windswept Trees (framed)" by Rebecca Vincent

“The windswept trees have a powerful energy and the colour is very intense in this piece. People often ask me about the patterns - are they meant to represent something in particular? The idea began as a limestone pavement with cracks and grooves but as it developed I added more patterns and it become more abstract in nature - like a patchwork quilt. This etching was created on a copper plate - tiny grooves and pits were made using a variety of resists and ferric chloride. The plate is inked up in 12 colours then wiped back carefully before being printed onto damp paper on a traditional etching press (a bit like a mangle if you can remember mangles!) The plate is inked and printed by hand for every print in the edition.”

"Hope Rose, 2014" by Helen Elliston

“I love the yin-yang relationship of roses; delicate circling petals rising above pointed leaves - opposites that cannot exist without the other. I used a striking palette fading from blue through to red, to create an elaborate visual statement celebrating this beautiful flower. The foliage background was painted with dry brush strokes to blend the colour sections softly together; being out of focus it gives full limelight to this beautiful rose.”
