“I wanted to capture the pure abstract pattern of the staircase as it closely resembles the 'golden spiral' in geometry. In order to do this I had to ensure that I was pointing my camera vertically upwards, the lens being parallel with the ceiling. To capture the full width of the staircase but not include the first window was quite tricky compositionally. I used my wide angle lens at 16mm on my full frame Nikon D800 to capture the image. It has been slightly cropped to get the best perspective post capture. A black and white conversion enables the pure shape and form to dominate the image without any distraction from colour. I owe some thanks to the security guard who was on duty on the day as he allowed me to lie flat on the floor with my head and camera dead centre of the spiral looking straight up into the centre of the skylight. I did get some funny looks from the other visitors!” - Ben Hull
