About Viv Owen

  • Biography
Vivid oil paintings evoke emotions gleaned from the twitching dazzle of the television screen. My paintings express emotions and dramas. I take my inspiration from mass media images and distort, crop and manipulate them. I then paint freehand in strong colour combinations with dazzling lights and atmospheric shadows. I use Windsor and Newton Artist's products: oil paints on canvas, which allow me to layer paint in diffuse clouds or solid blocks to achieve the elusive likeness. I hope to intrigue, charm and enchant you with the finished paintings.

I studied art, including an MA at Leeds Beckett University. I exhibit regularly from my studio in Wakefield, and at galleries and shows in Sheffield, London and further afield. (Photos and information on my Exhibitions page).

We are opening this to all artists you can physically drop off and collect their artwork. You bring your art, we will do the rest!

Bring It! is open to artists and creatives working with any medium (painting, sculpture, photography, performance, video art, animation, film, documentaries, poetry, writing).

Just like Print it! We are trying to remove as many barriers to showing work in a physical gallery space as possible, therefore we have a limited number of frames, projectors and TV creatives can borrow to allow them to exhibit in our space. "

    Dates: 16 Jul 2022 - 27 Aug 2022

Venue: Cupola Contemporary Art Gallery, Sheffield

“We live between tomorrow and yesterday. The past is always with us acting as foundations for our future. Living with the Past is our exploration of these foundations whether they are cultural, personal, physical or even geological. We have gathered together artists that traverse the past.”

    Graham Shapley, Curator

"The strength and the diversity of work is exciting and intriguing. The exhibition feels incredibly honest, deeply personal and in some cases emotionally ‘raw’. There are glimpses into half revealed stories and histories, forgotten or neglected urban landscapes, craft, politics, social circles, societal norms, class, religion, family and relationships. From photography to sculpture, painting to textiles, abstract or figurative, every piece is a result of the unique past of each artist.”

    Karen Sherwood, Director

    Event: A Splash of Colour

    Dates: 19 Mar 2022 - 20 May 2022

Venue: Bowery Visual Arts, 54 Otley Road Headingley Leeds LS6 2AL

Helen Field and Viv Owen work in adjoining studios at Westgate Studios in Wakefield

‘Although we enjoy a similar space and conditions and light in our studios at first glance it would appear we have very different works, but what actually connects our work is a joy of using colour’

Viv blends her oil paint colours directly onto stretched canvas, aiming to keep the vibrant and immediate reactions to her chosen subject. Her vivid, gestural oil paintings display a fascination with facial expressions captured from paused film and television. The paintings glance at one another, and invite the viewer to guess at their feelings of grief, intrigue, amusement or joy

Helen enjoys a strong colour palette including acrylic paint for bold application, richly pigmented inks and thickly applied oils for texture. In this series created through and beyond pandemic restrictions, you can see a longing to escape followed by an explosion of energy and excitement at the emergence of spring

    Event: Under The Bed Sale

    Dates: 15 Jan 2022 - 5 Feb 2022

Venue: Cupola Contemporary Art Gallery, Sheffield

    The annual sale event:
"Cupola's Under The Bed Sale is the most popular event of the gallery calendar. It brings hundreds of people to the gallery, many of whom are visiting for the first time, to see if they can find a bargain! The concept behind this event came about many years ago when an artist friend of mine invited me to her house and pulled out rather a lot of work from, quite literally, under her bed. When I asked if she would show it, she replied that she wouldn't because it was old and out of date work. However she also said she didn't want to throw it away. When I asked her if she would sell it, she, unsurprisingly said, "of course!" This was how the sale was born. This is an opportunity for artists to put older and out of date work on sale at bargain prices. "

    Event: Scion

    Dates: 27 Nov 2021 - 8 Jan 2022

Venue: Cupola Contemporary Art Gallery, Sheffield

"Scion is Cupola’s open call selected Christmas exhibition. Artists have been invited to submit work which responds to the title of the exhibition.

    Scion - meaning…

A detached shoot or twig containing buds from a woody plant

    guardian

a descendant, especially a first generation descendant

In Cupola’s 30th anniversary year, the gallery wishes, for its Christmas show, to celebrate a reawakening or a rebirth, if you like, after such a difficult period. Artists never stop creating and Cupola intends to continue to offer new opportunities and to respond to challenges with new growth and new ideas.

“We are delighted with the response to our call out and have been excited to see so many submissions from artists new to the gallery from near and far across all media. It is going to be a challenge to bring it all together but the quality and diversity is really exciting.” Karen Sherwood, Director and curator. "

Most people estimated the lifespan of Cupola Gallery to be around 6 months, but we are very happy to announce that not only are we still here but we intend to stay. Having survived numerous challenges over the years, the gallery does not intend to give up now! To celebrate not only the survival but the energy, determination, passion and innovation of the gallery, Cupola is putting a call out to artists to submit to create a show that represents the range and breadth of work Cupola has had the delight to showcase over our many years of trading. Cupola has shown the work of over 10,000 artists from all corners of the globe, as well as showcasing locally based talent, since opening our doors in 1991. We delight in the creativity of artists and wish to share this delight."

    Event: Pause/Play Solo Exhibition

    Dates: 31 Jul 2019 - 1 Sep 2019

Venue: The Project Space, Westgate Studios, 55 Westgate, Wakefield WF1 1BW

Vivid freehand oil paintings convey the twitching dazzle of expressive faces captured from paused TV screens. In the Project Space, viewers encounter a grid of paintings in which their eyes can wander at leisure and play with fresh narratives: conflicts, romances and relationships hinted at in the arrangement of images.

This was an epic 7 years in the making, utilizing paintings from several different image cycles. I took the rare opportunity to display paintings as a wall reminiscent of a cinema screen or video wall, keeping the rest of the gallery space bare to focus the viewers attention in the same way that cinema does. The grid has no centre painting, due to the even number displayed, so that the eye cannot settle, but instead follows the rivers of colour and dark that are created by the abrupt joins where one painting butts directly against another. In this way I made them jostle for our attention in the familiar pattern of a busy social media feed or ubiquitous billboards.

We focus on keeping the work on display local and original to help artists of all types sell their work while they're still alive (why does it take dying to gain recognition?). Each show usually features between 50-150 local artisans, a unique lineup of live musicians and/or DJs, live painting, body painting, along with other forms of entertainment. Oh, and of course PANCAKES!

We seek to bring the art community and those outside the community together by creating an upbeat art show that appeals to the masses. "My work consists of colourful paintings that deal with the darkest experiences of our lives. Inspired by mass media imagery and its ability to engage our emotions in a safe, socially acceptable way, they can still move us. Perhaps even haunt us...

All my work is done 'by hand'. I rely on the process of seeing then drawing or painting: no tracing here. I work from edited computer-prints snatched by my camera from a flickering television screen, but the transfer from digital to paint is by observation only.

I use selections and distortions, vibrant colour combinations, and multi-layered textural surfaces to convey the twitching dazzle of the arrested TV picture. I experiment with my works, by exhibiting them in different combinations: reminiscent of a film sequence, or a video wall. I create interactions between the paintings, suggesting the narrative sequence or different viewpoints of the same moment"

Bring it! is an exhibition that runs in conjunction with our Print it show. While Print it! is for artists that can’t physically make it to the space, Bring it! is for the locals who can bring it!

Since 2009 we've been filling the best venues in over 30 cities around the world with your favorite local artists, photographers, bands, and DJ's.

Through the shows we create an environment where artists, potential buyers, and pancake fanatics alike can make connections with several different types of people within their own communities." - Pancakes and Booze

Biography
