    Original Sketch for "Seed" Painting

    Original Sketch for "Seed" Painting

I came across this in one of my sketchbooks recently and thought I should share! This is the original drawing I produced for when I first had the idea for my painting entitled "Seed", which is now sold. Interesting how this is the idea first being planted......

    Current Work in Progress

    Current Work in Progress

This is a detail from a piece I am currently working on and very close to being finished. At around this time every year I go crazy for the bearded irises and poppies on offer in gardens and growing just around the city. They are my main motifs I would say and I love painting them and enjoying the result.

WORK IN PROGRESS TEACHING DEMO PIECE - The finished article

WORK IN PROGRESS TEACHING DEMO PIECE - The finished article

Having decided that this little piece deserved more attention, I aimed at adding more detail to it today and ended up finishing it! This sometimes happens as I often allow the painting to dictate what and how much it needs to become a finished piece. Knowing when to stop with painting is a really useful trick.....

    Me at Work Painting

    Me at Work Painting

This is me working on a piece which has been over a rather long time. There are lots of small detailed areas to work on with this piece, therefore I keep it at my home studio, where I can work on it bit by bit

    Home Studio

    Home Studio

I have two main studio spaces, one which is a public space where I paint larger pieces, stretch canvases, store things, pack paintings and teach painting and drawing workshops and courses to small groups of adult learners. I also have a spare room at home where I mainly paint smaller pieces in the evenings! That way I have access to my art however I need to and I've always got something on the go, definitely always more than one piece at a time. I do this to allow paint to dry and it gives me opportunity to explore what I want when I want. This is a shot from my home studio

Work in Progress Teaching Demo Piece - blocking in with colour and adding detail

Work in Progress Teaching Demo Piece - blocking in with colour and adding detail

This is the demonstration piece for the Specialist Landscape Oil Painting course with colour and a bit of detail. This is how it looked at the end of the course having demonstrated how to block in colour, and add detail, such as glazing and scumbling for sky and cloud effects, atmospheric perspective to give the illusion of distance and grasses. We looked at colour mixing in some detail especially greens! This piece as it is is okay for a demo piece, however I feel compelled to give it some more time and add some detail in the way of grasses etc in the foreground. Therefore it will continue to be a work in progress for a little while longer.....

Work in Progress Teaching Demo Piece

Work in Progress Teaching Demo Piece

This April I put on a specialist oil painting course for a small group of students at my studio. The course focused on indirect oil painting techniques which can be used for painting landscapes. This is the demonstration piece I created during the course. At the start of the course we looked at how a toned ground could add to the result of a landscape painting. we used burnt sienna to tone the grounds which was allowed to dry. I then showed students the techniques for sketching in landscape elements concentrating on tonal values, which will be referred to furthermore during the process. We also discussed how the colour of the toned ground can be used to add to the overall look of the painting, by working with layers of semi-opaque and transparent paint.
