My first print in my not-quite-set-up studio!

Once my etching press was reassembled, I couldn't wait to ink up a plate and pull my first print on it..... and that was many prints ago! Nonetheless, nothing compares to the anticipation of peeling the paper back from a plate or block after it has been through the press.....

I also own a small tabletop press which is actually a die cutting machine for craftspeople. Some bright person decided it might make a good inexpensive press. Now there is an active on-line community of new and experienced printmakers using the X-Cut press for relief and intaglio printmaking. It is wonderful for demos and teaching as it is highly portable and simple to use.

Preparing a lithography stone at college.

I am lucky that the college I attended to learn printmaking has two litho presses and a substantial collection of old stones (Bavarian limestone) as well as two accomplished and dedicated lithographers to teach.

    My etching press

I don't know much about my press, only that it was manufactured in Europe and was used in a school or college where the students obviously experimented putting all kind of things through the press! That meant the rollers needed some work when I purchased it from a fellow printmaker near Ottawa. But this lovely press has changed my artistic practice, allowing me the time and the independence to experiment and learn.
