harvesting trees for my twig art collection

Trees are best harvested in winter when the sap is in the roots. Trees are harvested from my property and dried before painting to resemble birch trees, which are then sewn to the canvas.

Placing harvested trees on the canvas for "Winter Sparkle" (18x24 inches) to see how they will look.

    deciding on composition

Once the trees are harvested, dried and trimmed, I place them on the canvas before the background is fully painted, so see how they will look. This was a dry run for "Winter Magic" 30x40 inches.

trees painted and ready to go

Once the trees have been painted to resemble birch trees, I place them on a painted background so see where they will go. My idea is to create a winter birch grove in this ethereal winter landscape. This is for "Winter Magic" 30x40 inches.

    holding it all together

In creating my Twig Art Collection, after my trees are painted and placed on the canvas, they are held in place with painters tape while I sew them on. This is "Winter Magic" in progress, 30x40 inches.

    sewing art!

    sewing art!

In my collection of Twig Art pieces, part of the process was to sew painted trees onto the canvas. Here I am sewing trees to my "Winter Magic" painting, 30x40 inches.

    hand sewn art

When creating my Twig Art Collection, part of the process was to sew real trees onto the canvas. With a background in Fashion Design, the sewing part came naturally, and even makes an art statement in itself. This is the back of "Winter White" 16x16 inches.

A look at the 3D nature of my Twig Art. Photo taken in sun to show how the trees cast shadows across the canvas. Trees sewn by hand onto the canvas. Real trees. Real tactile art. This is "Winter Sparkle" 18x24 inches.

A glance across the top of a Twig Art piece so you can see how 3D they are. This is "Winter Sparkle" 18x24 inches.

    NEWS ABOUT SHIPPING TO USA

    NEWS ABOUT SHIPPING TO USA

Hello, I just want to get the word out there that even though de minimis ended on August 29th for most products being shipped from Canada to the United States, original paintings are STILL EXEMPT. I just went through the process on Canada Post of creating my first shipment to the United States after August 29th. I went through the process of declaring what I was shipping, the price of the art, and received a code for customs that says there in NO DUTY required to be paid on ORIGINAL PAINTINGS. So please feel free to buy that painting you love. I will be more than happy to ship it to you in the States. And if you have ANY questions about this, please feel free to contact me. I've added a photo of the declaration I received for customs because there has been so much speculation and disinformation about whether or not there will be duty charged on original art. Even I was unsure at times because of conflicting information. But there it is in black and white. Proof. Love you all! Suzanne

    Today in the studio

    Today in the studio

This is a progression that has come from my "Colourful Shapes" or "Messy Squares" style of abstract painting. They look more like river rocks or rocks at the edge of the water. These are both 36x36 inches and very much "in progress" at the moment. The left one is unstretched, but created on a Masonite board. The one on the right is on traditional stretched canvas. Coming soon to my shop! Please send me a message if you'd like to know when they're done.

    Work in progress

    Work in progress

This is what I painted on that huge white canvas I posted earlier. This measures 46x46 inches. Still a work in progress, but close. I've painted an extra 3 inches all round so that when it's stretched you'll see the painting roll over the edge. Such a lovely modern look. This photo was taken in my studio by a window, so there's a lot of light to one side.
