    Whats occuring

    Whats occuring

It seems quite a lot has happened since my last wrote here. Away from the art there has been that Brexit thing sharply followed by Covid. Then there’s the planet warming threat just incase we weren’t getting enough to think about, or rather act upon. On the art front I have spent time in Cornwall and in the Hebrides recently, namely the Isle Of Skye. Also managed to squeeze in a fortnight in the wonderful Mysore, India. All of these travels have inspired new bodies of work. Travel inspires. As you will see through the following pages I have concentrated on works with a ‘Sense Of Scape’, re-imagining coastlines and landscapes that I have spent time on or around. These have been mostly large paintings in which I have tried to suggest the feel and atmosphere of the scene whilst exploring texture, colourways and shapes on canvas, largely in acrylic paint. It is great to see the viewer interpret the painting in their own personal way recollecting atmospheres and visions, sometimes reading different interpretations of the painting to mine, or just appreciating the way I have expressed an abstracted scene. I work intuitively almost never referring to photos, and welcome things that happen by chance with paint. Sometimes my compositions begin as soft pastel sketches with the help of some acrylic paint to achieve highlights or sharp features. Other times straight to canvas. Taking pictures constantly also feeds the creativity. Skip textures, lichens, seaweed, luscious layers of paint peeling off neglected exterior doors all provide inspiration for colour, shapes and texture and occsaionally results in setting myself loose on total abstracts. I have art shows through the year, either solo, or group shows. My instagram feed paulushillary will announce upcoming shows and activities. I would be delighted if you came along.

    Courtyard arts Auction, Hertford

Tickled me to see my metre square canvas of a view across to Harris Island mountains in the Hebrides behind the auctioneer at the recent fine art auction at Courtyard Arts. They raised over 3k for the development of the arts Centre. Well done them

    Harpenden, Hertfordshire POP-UP Show

    Harpenden, Hertfordshire POP-UP Show

2 week show with 6 fellow artisticos in Harpenden. Appletree Forum took over an unused smart property to enable 7 of us to showcase some of our work for 2 weeks. The snow tried it's best to keep people away but we had a lot of interest. My 1 metre Abstract in Greenish yellow went to an artlover in Harpenden. Well worth doing, and great camaraderie

    Location sketching in Oslo, Norway

    Location sketching in Oslo, Norway

Love Oslo. Spent a week there in a good friends' City home. Really enjoyed biking and sketching around the city. Wonderful architecture, both Hi tech and 1800s. Lots of sculpture parks and art galleries. The Vigerland Sculpture park is just wonderful for figure sketching. Figures don't move §;-)

Studio One I use for oilpainting. Early morning is my favourite time to fire in to painting. No disturbance - I’m a bit of a morning person anyways.
