About Martin Rowsell

Creativity has always been in my blood; all my early childhood memories include some form of art or crafts. 

From school, I followed my heart to art college and a career in graphic design. This vocation has provided me with a successful career for thirty years. As technology has become more advanced, I have found that painting has provided a better way to use my creativity.

Working predominantly on large canvases, after being previously restricted by screen size, allows me greater freedom to express myself fully and create the work I want.

My art is inspired by the Andy Warhol and the titans of US Pop Art as well as Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake and other British artists of the Fifties and Sixties. My aim, with my own work, is to create modern, bold, eye-catching art that provokes the senses and stimulates conversation while also being accessible and understandable to all. It is important to me that the handcrafted elements of the painting are not hidden; that the viewer is able to see my brushstrokes or the depth of the paint on the canvas.

While currently painting icons and well-known people because campaigning for greater equality and diversity is important to me, I plan to also use my art in the future to educate and introduce to my audience less well-known people, unsung heroes, or those that have had an impact on the world in some way.
