    The full BBC South Today feature (7th Oct 2016) reporting on launderettes and their decline from 12,000 in the UK in the 1970s to around 135 in the south, today. A look at what is being done to make launderettes more appealing to the public, including Mahlia Amatina’s laundry art project ‘Around the World in 80 Washing Lines’.

    Around the World in 80 Washing Lines

    I shall be creating 80 new works of art in a variety of different mediums that will replicate washing lines from 80 different countries. This project is an extension of the thought process behind the painting “Look! They Also Dry Their Clothes!” exploring the universally understood and accepted notion of hanging our clothes out to dry. The project will have multiple dimensions involved, and I’ll be having conversations with many people from around the world to capture a glimpse of the stories that are behind each washing line and creating a mini-blog to showcase each art piece. CALL TO ACTION: I need your help though! 80 countries is a lot to cover and one is in need of your participation in achieving this project. So, if you travel abroad and see a washing line – please photograph it for me and, if possible, let me know the story of the people and culture associated with the clothes, or even something about yourself – why you are there and what struck you about the washing line
