About Lily Hargreaves

  • Biography

I am a painter and I depict imagined scenes in order to celebrate the transcendent power of fiction while also critiquing its role in contemporary life. I take an experimental and expanded approach to story-telling with characters and landscapes appearing from an alternate past, present, or future in a variety of circumstances that lead to questioning how structures of our modern world may become malleable when fictionalised. Time, place, and class, for example, are flexible, and I often insert characters that are in some way or other outsiders in their own society within these unreliable constructs to explore new unburdened modes of existence. I note the imagination as a constant in a world in flux both as distraction and as escape.
