    Affordable Art Fair London

TWO PAINTINGS SOLD AT AAF LONDON. Last week saw this event at Battersea. It was great to go along to see what is currently perceived as contemporary. There were galleries from across the world at the event. My work was with Greenstage Gallery. I really enjoyed seeing what other artists are currently producing and listening to the gallery owners talking to buyers. The whole event was very good for visitors with children catered for too with a print workshop. It's always good to see paintings on display and to be on the end panel so visible to those in the corridors was great. Two of my paintings sold.

    Creating Arc I

    Creating Arc I

This painting is 50 x 100 cm and one of three created as a choice for a client who is looking for a Tour de France painting to fit a specific space. The riders on the final day with the Arc de Triomphe in the background. It has atmosphere and movement. Lots more detail than my usual paintings, but still expressionist. So no portraits of riders, but the body shapes give clues to who's who.

    Painting stages in stages ...

Paintings have been progressing inspired by the Tour de France 2015. A quick hop over the channel 7 days ago to catch a couple of days of the Tour de France 2016 also helped as a visual reminder of the various components of bikes and riders attire, to say nothing of the muscle tones of the different rider specialities. Works being created for a commission (one of the taller ones), for sale and for exhibition in August 2016.

"High Noon" - anyone seen the missing cyclists?

This is the 8th stage of painting on this particular canvas. It will show cyclists coming over the brow of a hill at the hottest part of the day. Background trees have filled in well, and the crowds are building. Of course you have the obligatory arms held high with camera phones too :)

Back into the studio and working on a series of Tour de France canvasses. Using oils so getting used to different brush spring to the softer wider brushes used with acrylics on last series of works.

    Understanding anatomy

    Understanding anatomy

The interraction of rider/driver with machine or beast has to be understood to make my latest body of work effective. Cyclists are not all one shape or size and their muscles develop differently depending upon the position they take in a team or their discipline. The same is true of motorcycle riders depending on the size of their machine, whether on a track, or on a hillside in mud. Even car drivers, of the old classics, have to wrestle the wheel and that affects the way in which they should be painted or drawn. Pit crews are a challenge all of their own as they perform their tasks. So I make a point of drawing the human form from life at least once a week. Whether male or female, the observation helps. It's also a great space to see what mediums others are using and to try out new techniques.

The first thing I do is stop the canvas being white. It gets a second gesso ground which is tinged with colour. Magenta is one of my favourite choices to help the colours in the final work zing. Sometimes I'll leave a spot or two in the final layer. Then I may just rough out the key elements of the work in watery purple. That gets totally covered as I build up layers over a period of time with loose brushstrokes.

Capturing cycle races in motion for future painting inspiration

Capturing cycle races in motion for future painting inspiration

The atmosphere and noise of an event filters through into my paintings. Wheels clattering across cobbles, the swish as bikes fly by at up to 35 mph. The crit at the end of the Wales GP in Abergavenny enables me to move to various points, to capture a sweeping curve (kneeling on the ground), another left-hander with them coming head on, the cobbles, the downhill and the finish straight. I'm totally lost in what I'm doing, if they overshoot the run-off I'll have a mouthful of bike parts! Team bosses and crew help me keep track of what lap and which bunch is leading.

    Curating a solo show

    Curating a solo show

Once the drawings and paintings are created they need to be seen. I work with physical galleries as well as online gallery ArtFinder. It takes about half-a-day to decide how to hang what where in a 6 - 9 metre space. This was at Timothy Hawkins Gallery, Bartestree where I also considered how my work should be framed to complement the wonderful bespoke furniture he creates. It's great to see work hanging in a gallery space that could be someone's home.

The TdF 2014 series at the framers ...

This was the first sight of the smaller works in the series together before they were exhibited in February 2015. Chosen a very simple natural oak frame to compliment the paintings and make them suitable for most homes or offices when hung.

I tend to work in the gloom! It seems to encourage me to make the paintings brighter. Working on a series or a couple of linked works at a time with a limited colour palette gives a consistency and balance to the pieces when seen together.
