    Taking my studio outdoors

Being out of doors is important to me, for health and well-being, so if it’s sunny and dry I will move my work outside. It’s lovely to be bathed in both the warming sun and the sounds of nature around me.

    Work in progress

    Work in progress

Welcome to my studio. I thought you might like to see how I work...often with two or three paintings from the same series. I can ensure the collection is coherent that way and I also develop ideas through the series when moving from one work to the other. The smaller works here are reminding me of the techniques I'm using when I'm working on the big one.

    #MakingArtWork

This was so much fun to make and in doing so I discovered some lovely effects of pooling colour behind the barriers of masking fluid. I'm making artwork to make are work.

    Birch Bark time lapse

I love painting birch trees- the bark is so satisfying with all the scars and peeling bark. The lovely lovely contrast makes me happy.

    One Scene, Many Views

    One Scene, Many Views

This is a reference photograph from my breif trip to Geurnsey in March. A group of us artists here are using it to make our own interpretation to share! It's very exciting to see how everyone uses the reference and what each of us makes.

    Kicking off the show season

Here I am with my best artist friend and fellow Artfinder artist, Theresa Shaw, at the opening of our first show together this season with the group we run- Devon Art Pop. It's always brilliant working together and being able to share our work with visitors and to connect with the .

    New Year, new series

    New Year, new series

I was given some glorious lilies as a thank you by one of my students. They are so architectural and strong in that form I wanted to capture this and choose to work in pen and wash making single line drawings- in the same way as I do capturing the character of animals when I paint them. So a whole new body of work is born. At this moment I am adding the last details to the lily paintings while the ink dries on two more that I am working on. Exploring different subjects with different techniques is good...it's a journey of discovery and I am loving the bold lines that are formed when I don't let the pen lift from the paper. I hope you note too that my pen is colour coordinated to the lilies and my painting!

No Escape- or working in 3D

No Escape- or working in 3D

As an artist, art and creation is who I am...not what I do, not just any old 'job'. I discovered that there really is no let up, no holiday from ones self, and therefore being an artist means to be constantly at work. But of course, 'find a vocation in what you love and you never have to work a day in your life' also rings true. Recently I was incredibly fortunate to spend some time on the lakes of Northern Ontario when I retouched with nature. I didn't paint much, but I did soak up inspiration at every angle... Here I am wood carving around the campfire...I made some chopsticks...already put to good use....and a spoon, which I am rather pleased with. It's the most precious momento. The view, will be turned into paintings this winter in the studio, where I can obsess over trees and reflections without being anxious that I am missing the very nature I was sat in when actually on location.

    Teasing the ducks

    Teasing the ducks

Here I am teasing life into Jemima, a funny waddling puddle duck. She's got a partner called Gerald. I love working on this super rough handmade paper, it suits wet in wet work very well indeed.

    Finishing touches

    Finishing touches

Here I am finishing up some of my pen and wash cow paintings. I love to work these and they always make me smile, and I love to work in this room, there's lots of glass so the light is incredible...if sunny and changeable at this time of year!
