“Life, Death, Stem Cells & Botox” (After L.Friedlander)

“Life, Death, Stem Cells & Botox” (After L.Friedlander)

Update on my current painting with revised title. I wanted a title that sends a clue as to the meaning of the animal skulls as I have been getting feedback that the painting is “evil” and “scary”. The painting is more than a comment or irony take on cosmetic enhancement. It is also about human life experiences brought about by trauma; for example when we contemplate death through illness and then later survival through recovery. The skulls are symbolic of humankind’s use of animals for experimentation in research. Remember Dolly the cloned sheep?

“Beauty Is Only Skin Deep (after L. Friedlander)”

“Beauty Is Only Skin Deep (after L. Friedlander)”

This large painting is work in progress 100cm x 100cm x4cm and will shortly be for sale in my Artfinder shop. Featuring three female nudes bearing animal skulls; set in a landscape of silver birch trees and flowers (to be added to the foreground) it brings together in one painting all the main subjects of my previous works to date. It even shows the influence of my first commission dealing with humanised animals. As we gaze at the nudes they bring us into focus with our mortality (our naked states when we arrive and leave our lives). Their skulls remind us that mankind is just another animal amongst many others on the earth; fragile & vulnerable underneath. Modern young women already beautiful; cut and inject their bodies for so-called perfection but to some actually become more grotesque. We are all the same underneath if you scratch away the surface... or are we? (This painting recognises the amazing work of photographer Lee Friedlander in his book “Nudes”).

    “Breaking Away From Convention”

This is a recent extra large abstract painting that I completed which reveals my love of abstraction and the influence of great modern abstract artists like Kandinsky and Klee.
