Paris Pere Lachaise cemetery painting becomes book cover

Paris Pere Lachaise cemetery painting becomes book cover

I didn't really take up oil painting until around 2017, as my main passion was for pencil and charcoal. This is one of my first oil paintings which was largely imaginative but also inspired by my many wanderings around Paris' Pere Lachaise cemetery, which I used to sketch and paint often. In 2021 it was adapted for the front cover of Lars de Brabander novel, set within the cemetery and centered around the protagonist Alphonse De Montadour,

Sketches and studies in pencil, charcoal and watercolour

Sketches and studies in pencil, charcoal and watercolour

A series of sketches and studies - some are pencil, some a mix of charcoal powder and graphite pencils and others are watercolour value studies. They are original ideas from places I've visited where I'm thinking carefully about the design and focal points of what it is I want to capture. The only exception are the four small thumbnail sketches on the tan coloured paper which are watercolour studies (with white gouache highlights) after old oil paintings by Arnold Bocklin and John Singer Sargent... I take inspiration from a vast range of artists, and occasionally make studies after them.

I use traditional pencils and chisel them to a broad edge on a piece of sandpaper, which allows for broader and more expressive strokes, and also allows me to build up the values far more quickly.

    Pencil Sketchbook

    Pencil Sketchbook

My first love was always for the pencil, and I continue to sketch and draw alongside painting. The two disciplines require different techniques but the mindset remains the same... These are sketches from local travels.

    Alla Prima Portrait Painting

    Alla Prima Portrait Painting

I start paintings in different ways, sometimes with no drawing, just colour. Although I primarily paint landscapes, I venture into portraits, and like to start with a rough broad outline (drawing with a brush) and a basic block in, before adding additional paint.
