  • A Meditation on Art, Painting and Place.

In a meditative manner, to the music of Eric Satie's gorgeous "Trois Gymnopedies", I attempt to describe how working close to nature but in the city is a major influence on my painting, blending with my technique to create my artwork. In fact, place and painting are inseparable. I am greatly influenced by the light and beauty in Wales and around the Swansea area in particular. Most of my paintings inspired by the bountiful beauty that surrounds me, the sounds as well as the images. You might even notice the odd inspiration that made it to be a painting too (as well as the odd painting of my inspirational Swansea). Welcome to my Attic Art Studio and the place that inspires much of my artwork.

How to build an art studio/gallery in your back garden.

This is a mock "How to...." video detailing the steps in building an art studio/gallery in one's back garden. As I need more room to paint (I paint in my attic art studio at present) as my paintings get increasingly bigger, my husband project managed the building of an art complex at our home so that artlovers can visit for a private viewing of my artwork in the art gallery and also buy paintings, prints and so on from his log cabin office. I have sold dozens of pieces of artwork this way and really enjoy meeting artlovers who love my artwork. Having a viewing space is designed to help artlovers make that final decision about buying my artwork. I have sold dozens of pieces of artwork this way and really enjoy meeting artlovers who love my artwork. It also helps some artlovers to meet the artist and to get to know who they will be buying art from. It all adds to the enriching experience of buying art. Artlovers also often like to hear about the inspiration behind certain paintings and this brings the artwork to life. Although my paintings are professionally photographed some artlovers simply like to see the paintings in front of their very eyes. If you want to book a date to visit me at my home then contact me and arrange an appointment. We will be happy to see you.

    Winter Sunshine

    Winter Sunshine

There is very little I like more than enjoying the Winter sun. Recently I have been photographing people in my local park, naturalistic shots all bathed in this warm, golden light, to paint when I get home. Winter light is probably my favourite light of all, sparse, clear and beautifully shadow casting and more precious for it. Thank you for another great year Artfinder and especially you lovely artlovers who have bought some of my artwork over the last two years. Here's to a great 2015! x Emma

    Artfinder Gallery

    Artfinder Gallery

Thanks mainly to income from the sales of artworks via Artfinder over the last 19 months, I have been able to fund the design and construction of an art studio/art gallery in my back garden! This studio will give me more room in which to work and try out different media and will also be a private viewing space to view my artwork, open to the public, hence the tracking lights , oak floors and white walls. Thank you Artfinder. Check out my mock "how to build an art studio" video https://vimeo.com/117728547

    Quality Controlling My Artwork

    Quality Controlling My Artwork

I work very closely with my printer Redcliffe Imaging of Bristol to make sure that the Giclee print reproductions of my original oil paintings are as close to the original work as possible, that the colours are accurate and the light has as much verisimilitude as possible. This process involves Redcliffe sending me hard proofs of the potential Giclees on a very high quality 390gsm white, poly-cotton canvas "proof" before I give them the "go ahead" to print the Giclees that I think most accurately reproduce the quality of the original oil paintings. If the proof is not close enough to the original artwork I send it back until it is. Fortunately, Redcliffe Imaging are excellent and there is rarely a need to send proofs to and fro. This is all negotiated before I put this artwork in my Artfinder Shop for sale to artlovers. This quality control is essential as I pride myself on the quality of my Giclees and my artwork generally. The Giclee canvas I use, Hahnemuhle Leonardo Canvas, is quite expensive compared to printing on paper and other materials but for me the extra expense is required, it is essential. I find Giclees printed on paper lose much of their lustre, the colours are muted and the light loses it's brilliance. The painting often loses some of it's detail. It thus does not reflect the brillance of my artwork and is thus unacceptable for me. I want artlovers who purchase my artwork to have practically the same pleasure as I do when I first complete and look on a recent oil painting. It is an additional pleasure for me when artlovers frequently message me to say how much they love their Giclees, how they are pleasantly surprised by the quality of the prints, the brillance of the colours and light. Quality art at affordable prices is my passion.

    Pride of Place

    Pride of Place

This painting "A Summered Garden" is one of my favourite paintings, recently painted a few weeks ago. As such, it takes "pride of place" above the living room mantelpiece, beside my recent portrait of my husband and a small photo of our wedding, although Hattie, one of my cats seems unimpressed. I like to show my paintings in lived in environments so that artlovers can see how they may look on their walls too!

At Work in my Attic Art Studio

At Work in my Attic Art Studio

I work mainly from my attic art studio as the sky light enables me to paint most of the day, normally from 6.30 am onwards. When the light fades I switch on a combination of blue artificial "day" lights so that I can squeeze a bit more painting time in the evening too. My house and art studio overlook two parks, Singleton and Brynmill, here in Swansea, Wales. I can hear swans, ducks, various birds from my attic studio as well as magpies, seagulls and ravens scurrying across the tiled roof of the house. I love the sounds of nature and the sounds of children playing as I paint. It is very relaxing and conducive to painting, listening to these sounds amid the bustle of a city. My husband has started to build the foundations of a logged cabin art studio which will be in the middle of the back garden. I hope to move into it in a few months. My paintings are getting bigger as I need more room to work (and store canvas). Hopefully I will be even more immersed in the sounds of nature from my new studio.
