About Emily Hughes

  • Biography
Working with what is real, I add a dash of imagination, bringing a magical quality to the everyday and ordinary. I'm inspired by the grace and vulnerability in the world around me. Building up layers of images allows me freedom to explore the texture, form and colour of a scene, and create a memory of a time and place. Photography plays a vital social role as an aide to history, yet often falls short of capturing the truth of the personal experience of memory, which manifests itself in snatches, or moments which are fleeting, confused, blurred and non-linear.

Photography for me is not a hobby, or a profession. It is a way of seeing. Seeing the world more intently. It forces me to slow down, look, and question what I see. Like a collector I gather moments; each one consigned to my visual scrapbook where it can later be recalled; from crumbling Italian walls, to gentle ripples on the water of a Swiss lake. Later, I piece these snatches of time together to weave stories.

I am a passionate advocate of daydreaming, and a firm believer in the magic of storytelling. I often write poems or short stories about my images, some of which I include here, and would be happy to write one for you and include it with your print on request. For more examples of my work, writing, and ongoing projects you can visit my blog

I hope that my work invites you to look, to see, to seek, and to daydream.
