About Claire Mercer

My art practice revolves around painting scenes which to me evoke a sense of mystery and otherworldliness, whether they be still lifes, surreal images, landscapes or anything else which inspires or intrigues me.  My work alludes to an alternate landscape, a fictional universe that  arises, smoke-like,  from the still-warm ashes of a constructed past - from the tantalisingly obscure allure of the ancient, the folkloric, the apocryphal and the romantic; a realm built upon the allure of standing stones and medieval crenellations, of moonlit ruins and vaulted gothic ceilings.  I have a passion for painting atmospheric landscapes, and love the way that a few strokes of the paintbrush can create an ethereal moonlit evening, or a crisp morning in a misty valley... or simply a feeling of mystery and adventure.
