About Birungi Kawooya

  • Biography

My art passionately embodies the beauty of the African diaspora with a focus on dance, nature and wellbeing. I take inspiration from Ugandan classical Kiganda dance styles, flash dancing by The Nicholas Brothers and hiplet from Homer Bryant, interpreting these influences in my vibrant collages using layers of Ugandan batik fabrics and cutout card. I enjoy the challenge of capturing these complex and sophisticated dance moves in my 2-dimensional art and am passionate about helping you to express your artistic own vision by creating your own artwork in my Mindful African Art workshops.

My artistic journey of self expression leads me on a path towards joy, healing and rest; it is now crucial for me to reflect the importance of wellbeing in my work, elevating Black women at ease and having the luxury to dream. 10% of all sales go to Sistah Space a community-based organisation created to bridge the gap in domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls.
