    One of the materials I really enjoy using is very light tissue paper, to collage as a base, but to also collage on top of and incorporate into artworks. perfect for this, is dressmaking pattern paper, which I streak with acrylic colour then tear up when it's dry to add dimension and pattern to artworks. As the paper is so fine, when you paint on it, it goes straight through, so it has to be hung (literally) out to dry. Here is some of the paper I have been preparing this morning - letting the air get to it to dry both sides.

    Texture, Texture!

    Texture, Texture!

    I love adding texture to my canvas before I start to paint. This can be with various mediums or, my favourites, wrinkled tissue paper, or loo paper (unused of course!) I adore the authentic, grungey look you can achieve by spreading very soft paper on your surface in glue medium then letting it settle and wrinkle as it likes as you press gently down with your brush. This smaller canvas has a surface such as this with amazing ridges and crinkles made by collaging paper to the canvas before starting to work.

    I think I must have been a little overenthusiastic here .... I've been waiting hours for this patch to dry. P.S. It took several hours more to dry completely. Maybe apply the paint a bit thinner next time?
