  • The Art Fair Sydney

    The Art Fair Sydney

Well from the 18th-22nd of March was the Other Art Fair Sydney, which I was exhibiting at. The fair was well organised but to be honest, I am not one for fairs but prefer exhibitions. Apparently, it is notoriously difficult to be accepted and over 1000 artists apply each year, although I was accepted and had quite a large stall. There were supposed to be 100,000 people in attendance but we had unprecedented rain so I am not sure, yet the organisers said the numbers were higher than expected. I would probably not be part of this fair again and prefer to work anonymously, choosing not to be the public face of my work but rather let the work speak for itself. I did like talking to many people about my work but I feel this places the emphasis on the artist's personality and not the actual work. I think I like Banksy for this reason, he is anonymous and that is a good thing to be as an artist. Sure people want to know about you as an artist, particularly if they are collecting one of your works but the emphasis in my opinion should not be on the artist. One aspect of the fair that I did like was that people who had previously purchased my work came up and introduced themselves to me and we talking about the artwork they had and in its new home, with many sending photos of the artwork in place. That was a really nice surprise and I love to get photos of my artworks in people homes, which means more to me than selling. It makes it worthwhile to see that people put these artworks in their homes and in special places and it is loved.

    New Studio

    New Studio

A month ago now I moved into a large new studio. It is 64 square meters, which is bigger than many apartments I've lived in. It is huge! Here is a photo before I moved many of my works in. There is a couple of blank canvases being prepared for painting but if gives you an idea of the size of the studio. It is in a very secure complex so I can sleep at night not worrying someone may get in and damage or steal artworks. I am now able to create very large works as well, 2 x 3 meter and 2 x 4 meter works as well as my normal size ranging from 1.5 x 2 meter to 2 x 2 meter.

    Custom stretchers and stretching canvases

    Custom stretchers and stretching canvases

I make all my own canvases, that way I can ensure the quality of the surface I am painting on. Here is a photo of a few medium-sized stretchers I made using HD stretcher boards and braces. Then the canvas is stretched onto them. I use 12 oz or 14 oz professional-grade canvas for the best possible result so that the artworks last a very long time.

    The Sulman Art Prize 2017

    The Sulman Art Prize 2017

My entry for the Sulman art prize is a big one this year, being 5.1 Meters (200 inches) x 1.55 Meter (61 inches), is seems to be almost as big as my house. The prize is the most prestigious of its kind in Australia and is held as the NSW State Art Gallery. I wanted to share this photo a moment after completion. It was so big I couldn't paint it in my studio but had to work on it on my balcony.

The work continues - January 2017

The work continues - January 2017

Well more work to do, returning to abstract expressionism after painting a portrait and also some form work. Its refreshing to be free with my style of abstract expressionism, innate, unconscious and with emotion and a free mind. I like to free my mind of all thoughts during this process and just paint with feeling.

    A helping paw

Sometimes it helps to have a critic and one that understands what they are looking at. I have a family of cats, who are always present when I paint.

An Exhibition - one of many solo shows.

This is the "Hypnagogia" exhibition in Sydney, Australia 2014. The term Hypnagogia is the mental phenomena that occur during this threshold consciousness phase include lucid thought, lucid dreaming, hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. Often my work seems like its images from that moment between waking and sleep, when things seem different to what they are when one is awake.

Painting a new work in my outdoor studio

Painting a new work in my outdoor studio

This one is entitled "Cellular Longevity" and took 4 days to paint, layer upon layer, and hoping the rain would stay away. November 2016. Sometimes I paint outside, and at other times I paint inside. This style is abstract expressionism. Yet there is more control than one would think.
