About Bernard Myburgh

  • Biography

Bernard was born on the14th of October 1951 in the suburb of Melville Johannesburg, South Africa.

With the influence of his mothers artistic mind set as a pianist and a neighbor artist skilled in drawing and painting his desire for drawing was fueled. As a child Bernard never left home without his drawing pad and pencils. Whether going to a restaurant with his family or a family picnic Bernard's time in between eating was devoted to his drawing pad.

Bernard was constantly getting into trouble at school because drawing was far more important to him than the school lessons. When his drawing pad and pencils were removed as punishment he would sit and stare out of the window. The teachers eventually decided that drawing was more productive and so he was allowed to draw during lessons. In spite of his lack of attention in class he did graduate from High School.

Bernard attended the Michealis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town where conflict with the teachers was once again an issue. He found the teachings far too Avant Garde compared to his realism art.

Bernard left art school and continued teaching himself the skills he possesses today.

In 1990 Bernard moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands to be closer to the European art heritage from which he draws his inspiration.

Bernard is also very skillful with puppet making and wood carving but fine art remains his preferred creative medium. In 1999 he tried his hand at painting and slowly taught himself this new skill. His interest in painting and drawing animals began in 2014.

In 2015 with a growing concern for wildlife destruction, Bernard took an interest in painting wildlife. His paintings are created in support of the fight against wildlife terrorism.
