About Alessia Sinopoli

  • Biography

My name is Alessia, I am an Italian living in Berlin, and I am an artist who draws.

My tool is the pencil. My main interest lies in realistic portraiture.

    MY ART

Around these focal points (the pencil and realistic portraiture) revolves experimentation with different media – mainly colored markers and gold leaf – through which recurring stylistic traits of a naïve nature emerge: dots, curls, circular elements…

This type of doodling is commonly intertwined with realistic portraiture, infusing it with subtly surreal and magical elements.

I believe this dual stylistic front reflects an ambivalence rooted in my personality. Therefore, my artistic work and my personal growth journey strive to progress side by side, towards integration as harmonious as possible.

The central theme of my artistic work  lies in the human ambivalence; spiritual introspection, self-exploration.

    HOW I BEGAN

My artistic journey started when I was 15, and my father came home one Sunday morning with a large, solid wooden easel he had bought second-hand for just 20,000 lire at the famous Porta Portese market in Rome. Since then, I have always created and filled every possible space with paintings and drawings, which have accumulated significantly over time.

    EDUCATION

However, throughout this long journey, I never stepped into the art market nor systematically tried to enter gallery or exhibition circuits. I pursued art as a self-taught and independent endeavor, occasionally selling works. Concurrently, I earned a degree in Sociology and I s tarted workingwith the creative agency Matematici in Rome as a designer for videos and websites.

In 2011, I began to sense a sort of emptiness, a lack of meaning in my work as a designer. A rather troubled relationship also ended at that time. So I decided to take a break and visit a friend in Berlin. After a month I moved to Berlin to set up my own small business.

    THE PENCIL

In Berlin, I lived in an almost furniture-less apartment with other tenants. We had only the essentials, and there was no space, in that context, for my numerous tubes of oil colors, for drawers filled with all kinds of brushes, for the large solid wooden easel. I was left with just a pencil. Light, inexpensive, always at hand: the ultimate nomadic tool. It was there that I entrusted my artistic journey to the tip of a pencil, and since then, I’ve been an enthusiast for this instrument.

    SIGNIFICANT COLLABORATIONS

In Berlin, I was able to structure my work more towards art, relegating web design to a secondary role. Consequently, I secured two important collaborations: one with the Italian architecture studio FM Interior Design, who regularly commissioned me for pencil drawings. The other, with the craft beer production company “Terza Rima.” From this collaboration emerged the collection of drawings titled ‘Le donne’ (‘The Women’). Additionally, I worked as a freelance web designer for the startup Parkinglist.

    THE NOVEL

I am registered with the Künstlersozialkasse (Artists' Social Security Fund) as an artist and later as a publicist because in 2017 I published a novel in Italian, under the pseudonym Amanda Greco, titled ‘Gente di Berlino’ (People of Berlin), published by Ouverture Edizioni.

With the writing of the novel, I satisfied another of my passions: writing. Although it may seem that writing is a separate interest from drawing, these two dimensions actually interpenetrate: I love creating stories and linking them to drawings, I love creating drawings and building stories upon them.

FROM THE MATERNITY BREAK TO TODAY

After the novel’s publication, I became a mother to my first child and, two years later, my daughter was born. I took an extended break to focus on motherhood. In February 2023, I resumed working. In this new phase, I decided to abandon web design and any other professional branches outside the artistic field and fully commit myself to art.

From January 2024, I'm taking part in the six-month Art Up Now project, funded by the European Social Fund and the Department for Culture and Social Cohesion of the Senate of the State of Berlin, aimed at boosting artist visibility. As part of this initiative, I'll be exhibiting in a group show scheduled for July 2024 at the prestigious Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.

I am currently seeking representation from a gallery.

I am confident and curious to discover where this new phase of my journey will lead me. The rest of the story is yet to be written…
