It was Ernest Hemingway who said: 'How do you go bankrupt? Two ways. First gradually, then suddenly'. The same could be said of painting like this - initially it seems to take forever, then suddenly...hey presto...it's finished! If you go online you may see loads of painters posting time lapse clips of their work and even though these reels are speeded up, it is clear that the whole painting took no more than a couple of hours or so. Wowser. I appreciate it's mostly a PR exercise: no painter can burn through canvasses that fast. Most of my paintings take two weeks, sometimes a month, sometimes longer. It is impossible to make up an image like this, and it took longer to actually capture the image, than it did to actually paint. Even so the windows were fiddly, the brickwork on the left-hand house equally so, and the foliage on the right took forever. And yet, suddenly, without me even realising I was coming to the end, there was nothing else to do. Magic.
