Race You Back!

“Race You Back!” is an oil painting created on sailcloth and presented in a handmade teak frame. The painting captures two sailboats returning to the docks at the St. Pete Yacht Club in Tampa Bay. Warm end-of-day light breaks between the buildings along the waterfront as an ever-changing pattern of light and shadow moves across the water, sails, and the background marina.

Earlier that day, we had watched dozens of boats gathered outside the marina, seemingly caught up in an informal regatta. As we were leaving the area, we happened to pass by the marina just as the boats began returning to the docks. While photographing the scene, I imagined the two boats in the lead were still quietly racing each other, each determined to be the first one back. It felt like a small but meaningful moment of both competition and camaraderie.

Painting on sail material introduces an element of unpredictability and texture that becomes an important part of the work itself. The seams and weathered surface of the Dacron remain visible throughout the painting, acting almost like currents or guiding lines within the composition. Rather than hiding those imperfections, I wanted them to become part of the story — a reminder that the material itself once belonged to the same environment being portrayed. The sail is given one more opportunity to tell a story after already being part of countless others.

The handmade teak frame further reinforces the nautical character of the piece and reflects my appreciation for craftsmanship, woodworking, and sailing culture.
