This is a place that I visit very often when going on walks. This spot is right next to a bridge that goes over a stream which leads out to a lake down the road from where I live. But if you walk across the bridge, there's a path that goes along a very shallow waterway, which is one of the many remnants of the Morris Canal. The canal used to be an important way to transport coal and iron ore until 1924. It went all the way from Pennsylvania out to the Hudson River in Jersey City.

I did a lot of the initial painting with a palette knife to get plenty of paint on the surface quickly. And then I went in and used brushes to refine the landscape. There are still some areas with the smooth texture of the palette knife, and then there are others where you can see the grooves of the brush strokes. The scene has a lot of elements that I love when exploring the woods. It's got hilly terrain, a lot of contrast between the light and shadows, and light patches coming through the tree canopy, reaching down to the forest floor.

Oil paint on panel, palette knife and brush
