Jake Chapman writes as often as he sculpts. He has published four satirical novels alongside a solo art practice that continues the same interest in Goya, cruelty and dark comedy he once shared with his brother Dinos.

Since the Chapman brothers ended their joint career in 2022, Jake has exhibited solo, including a show titled Me, Myself and Eye. His work spans watercolour, sculpture and etching, often returning to the same 1937 reprint of Goya's Disasters of War that defined his earlier collaborative practice. He has also directed a film based on his own writing.

About Jake Chapman

Biography

About Jake Chapman

Jake Chapman was born Iakovos Chapman in 1966 in Cheltenham, England. He studied at North East London Polytechnic before completing a master's degree at the Royal College of Art in London. There, he began working with his brother Dinos, a partnership that lasted for more than 30 years.

Writer and solo artist

Jake Chapman has published several novels alongside his art practice, including The Marriage of Reason and Squalor, Meatphysics and Introspastic: From the Blackened Beyond. In 2015, he directed a film adaptation of The Marriage of Reason and Squalor, based on his own book.

Following the end of his professional partnership with Dinos in 2022, Jake continued to work with the same source material that defined the brothers' joint career. This included Goya's Disasters of War, developed independently through watercolour and etching.

Still working with Goya

Jake Chapman's solo prints and watercolours often revisit the same imagery of Goya's Disasters of War. His solo exhibition Me, Myself and Eye, announced in 2022, marked the public confirmation that the brothers were working independently. Jake has continued to explore anthropology, parody and religious imagery through his solo work.
