Famous impressionist artists
Impressionism began in France in the late 19th century. Artists painted people in cafés, afternoons in the garden and sunlight falling across water. They worked with visible brushstrokes, often leaving out small details to catch the light before it changed.
Those subjects still give artists plenty to work with. In contemporary paintings on Artfinder, you can find echoes ofImpressionism in a loosely painted landscape or a face picked out with a few touches of colour. A familiar view can look quite different depending on the weather, the time of day or what the artist chooses to notice.
Try looking at a painting from across the room, then move closer. What seemed to be a reflection or a shadow might be a single brushstroke.
