Artist Interview - Victoria Obolensky

Our community of artists is the core foundation of Artfinder. With such a vast community based in all corners of the world, we wanted to help them share more about their artist journey, their artistic process and technique and what inspires them. Today, we chat with one of our amazing painters, Victoria Obolensky.

Can you introduce yourself, where you are from and how long you have been with Artfinder for?

I'm originally from London and recently moved to Dartmouth in Devon with my 12 year old son Max and cat Toby. I have been with Artfinder for 2 weeks and nearly sold my entire collection!

How would you describe your work?

I aim for a degree of realism in my paintings whilst also attempting to capture the essence/unseen of whatever it is I'm painting.

What influences you and your work?

Many of the paintings are focused on water and the sea. I've always loved the sea...it feels like 'home'. I often visit the beach near to where I live to take photos of the sea. Many of which have become paintings.

What does your creative process involve?

Most importantly I have to be inspired by whatever it is I'm painting. I'll look at many images and can spend hours deciding what to paint. When painting I sometimes listen to meditation music to help influence the process. Colour and composition are really important in deciding what will work as a painting. When I've decided what to paint it's a matter of executing the idea, firstly with a drawing and then painting... acrylics and sometimes oils.

Have you changed as an artist overtime?

Yes definitely. I used to paint mainly abstract work and now the work is more realist. I've grown up emotionally hugely over my artistic career. Each painting teaches me something. I'm also a mother, so parenting alongside painting has meant I've had to learn to adapt to what feels like two, full time careers.

What’s your favourite artwork you created and why?

I have many favourites but I would say the most recent one that I love is called 'Liberty'... a large crashing wave with a cloudy, blue sky behind. I think the title of the painting says its all!

What do you think is the role of art/artists in society?

Today's world is changing very fast and social media has changed everything. It's hard to know what's real and what is fake. Art is crucial now more than ever. If art can create a positive soulful impact upon the viewer then it's a strong reminder of who we truly are.

What advice do you have for emerging artists looking to make a living out of their art career?

I would encourage new artists not to compare themselves to other artists. We are all unique and therefore so is our art. Paint what you love not what you think you should paint. If you are genuine about what you are creating, other people will sense that.
