Mainly using graphite (pencil and powder) and scratchboard, I aim for hyper-realism. Primarily, I render portraits of those who are rather iconic (Mother Teresa, Christopher Walken, John Wayne, Denzel Washington, Robin Williams, et al). Before any rendering commences, I study each figure, analyzing the depth of details (pock marks, scarring, birth marks, wrinkling, crow's feet, clefts) and set out the conventional outline, incrementally infusing textures. I love texture...I relish it all! To me, it is like depositing DNA, artistically.
Throughout the entire process I am focused on depicting the particular subject's emotional base (Robin Williams's portrait was a prime example), one which compelled emotion of my own. I delve deeply into my art pieces, uninhibited by a clock.
How do I know I achieved/exceeded my goal? When viewers intimate "Wow! You did that, with pencil?" and/or "The details are incredible!" That makes my soul fulfilled.
Enjoy monochrome artwork but also want color? I paint with acrylics and oils and pastel pencils, too.
